Remote Play stopped working correctly
I have a weak laptop so I launch a game on my desktop to play games on my laptop. Has worked in the past, but since today when I launch a game via remote play I hear the game sound but have a black screen. Believe this started after the latest steam patch.

My laptop uses a ATI driver and my desktop uses NVIDIA driver. Both use an Intel CPU. I made sure I had the latest video card drivers.

steam -> settings -> remote play -> [advanced host options]
tick hardware and amd/nvidia/intel(igpu) whatever you have
and nvfbc if you have an nvidia gpu

and raise the bandwidth limit
on host
steam -> settings -> remote play -> [advanced client options]
limit bandwidth = 50+ or unlimited

Was set to software encoding. Also changed limit bandwidth to unlimited on host. Still hear game sounds but black screen. The mouse pointer does change in game.

steam cannot grab hdcp protected video, will show black screen with audio

but most games do not use that, only players and streaming services
which you can get around by disabling hardware acceleration on browsers or players to watch media on link/remote play

I'm having almost the same problem, except when I'm streaming from my desktop to my laptop (client laptop has GTX 1060 mobile) only software decoding works. really, I was streaming mass effect legendary edition last night with hardware decoding enabled and it was totally fine for like 4 hours including multiple disconnects for breaks. I did update steam today as well and now have the same issue. I should add that I also updated my laptop to the latest Nvidia drivers today, which the desktop already had. Still haven't been able to figure it out, but the software decoding performs fine on my machine, and it's a 2016 4-core intel proc (Razer blade V6 or something)

Edit: PS its the "DXVA2 hardware decoding" that seems to be broken by the latest update. This is according to remote play when streaming with details enabled.

I was able to get remote play to work correctly after opting out of the steam beta update on both laptop and desktop computer. In any event thank you for your help.

It's the hardware decoding, last update seems to have broken it.

Seems so, disabling hardware decoding had shows streaming picture. Need to wait when(if) it will be fixed.

If youre having this issue and are on the beta steam version it is likely the hardware decoding, please add your specs to this bug thread if turning off hardware decoding fixes the issue.
