Remote Play overlay no longer showing up?

My friend and I successfully played last week (1/17/2023) via remote play. However, tonight - with the same game, settings, etc. - when I invite him via RP, the overlay interface for RP no longer pops up (my other steam overlays including chat, friends list, etc. still show up just fine). He can accept the invite and join my game (sees the stream, etc. so connectivity is not an issue), but then doesn't have the ability to control anything. Since the RP overlay interface isn't showing up, I can't enable or otherwise troubleshoot his controller access, etc.

Has anyone else had issues with the Remote Play overlay not showing up just recently - i.e., in the last week?

I couldn't find any information about this problem historically, nor any updates to RP or the Steam client more generally (last update was in December of 2022).

If it's useful for troubleshooting rule outs, we tested multiple games as well as both of us hosting. Regardless of the game or the host, neither of us ever got the overlay to show up, despite the other person being able to successfully connect. We will try a different friend soon to rule us being the source of the issue, but right now it seems unlikely that it is on our end given the behavior we are seeing in Steam.

Heads up for anyone hitting this and wanting a workaround for now, launch in Big Picture mode and you can go through the usual Friends > Remote Play Together route there.

Worked for me. I'm on the newer Big Picture version. But it might also work with the older BP.

Not sure if my BP is updated but, I dont see any option to invite anyone from big picture mode, could you explain where to navigate it exaclty?
BP mode>COmmunity>Friends> no options to invite
thats the only friends navigation ive seen too

yea doesnt work for me, right clicking doesnt show any options, maybe its only works on the beta?

Yeah afaik it only works in Beta, Sadly it's not a flawless solution since at least for me you only get to see the popup menu once, if you alt tab (to share link) or go back to game the menu disappears and I found no way of bringing it back so you have one shot and you have to wait for your friends to join for you to pick their input methods.

now we are looking for a way to get the panel back in Big Picture mode, what valve is doing with their platform is incredible!

Now the question for those of us who play on Valve's Steam Deck and it doesn't work. Could it work by running beta from desktop mode and then back to steam game mode? 🤔

I also have the same problem with the context menu in Overlay not appearing for Remote Play Together. No matter how many times I click “Invite Anyone to Play,” or “Create Invite,” nothing happens. I can still invite individual people to play via direct messages, but I cannot manage anything relating to the gameplay, so if they don’t have a controller, they’re completely out of luck, since I can’t give them keyboard access. But if they have a controller, there’s very little issue.

I have same issue. I started to play remote play together last week and everything was okay. But this wednesday i couldn't give permisson for controling keyboard to my friend (25th january). I tried different solutions but none of them worked. "Invite anyone to play" button doesn't seem to work anymore. I hope it will solved as soon as possible.
