AMD AM1 5350 Steaming performance .. VIDEO! Low budget setup.
Here is my newest client build:
M350 enclosure with picoPSU-80 and 60W adapter - $69
MSI AM1I - $35
AMD Athlon 5350 APU with Radeon R3 - $59
8GB Ram 1600 (I had these extra... really only need 4GB with this setup $45)
Wireless TP-Link Archer T4U Adapter - $39
120GB Mushkin SSD - $65

Total of this complete system is $312. plus tax and shipping..

Im pretty picky on my case that I used... I wanted the smallest very functional case i could get. There are plenty of other cases that would bring this setup down in price. The wireless network adapter could also be swapped out with a lower cost model or even without if your going for a lan connection.

I dont own a kill-a-watt metering device to measure specifically the draw. From researching other reviews on a 5350 system, I would guess under load it would be around 30-40w.

Steaming from a wireless connection @ 720p/60fps set on the "Beautiful" setting. High 20s - Mid 30s MS latency. Host set at hardware encoding w/ QuickSync. Client set as software decoding. Something is wrong with Steams AMD hardware decoding at moment that I was getting worse latency (60-70ms) with it also not capturing the whole screen. Once it gets implemented properly performance will increase even more. Even with software decoding I am getting superb latency at 720p.

Im curious if any of you guys are running an Intel J1900 / J2900 setup and the performance your getting from it. That was the other setup I was thinking about going for.

Hey Dynamite!

Thanks for posting this! I am also considering putting together a Steam Streamer based on the Athlon 5350. I have had a lot of concerns about its performance and latency, but this helps!

That case looks really interesting too, do you have any pictures of the inside with all the components installed you could share?

Also, how do you like that motherboard? I'm leaning towards the MSI or an ASRock mini ITX.

The MSI is a good board, its very basic but that being said a 5350 doesnt need a high end board. I am able to designate upto 2gb ram dedicated to the video and that does help on a few games. Overall most of the AM1 board are very similar, with 2 expections. Only with ASUS board give you options to overclock the 5350. Then a certian model of the AsRock has a direct DC plug into the MB so you dont need a PicoPSU.. you'll just need a brick.

I have a similar setup (Asrock AM1H-ITX + 5350 APU) and i am also quite happy about :)
im running steam under linux with the opensource gpu drivers, hardware decoding worked fine with this setup.
My connection is wired (gigabit) and i have only tested 720p right now, well latency is not a issue on this setup. couldnt try 1080p yet because my host monitor is only 1680x1050.

My MB is the one with the built in DC plug, it allows you to connect 2 sata devices this way.
But i havent used this one yet because i recycled my old htpc case which has a built in psu.
Nice board tho. i bought it because of the optical audio out mainly. No problems with it so far. many bios options but no overclocking as allready said.

As i said the system is running linux and used for htpc stuff, light gaming (mostly indie humble bundle games ;) ) and now also streaming from my gaming pc.
