begin streaming -> steam -> library -> select game -> controller config
select the controller and bind it as desired, or browse configs and apply one
or if steam is not showing the controller,
on client, steam -> settings -> streaming -> advanced -> make sure controller is enabled
The controller is detected correctly, the configuration is as it should be and changing it doesn't do anything. I think the problem is about steam not sending the controller's input to the host computer
Except that it doesn't. On rocket league at least, other games work normally, that's the only exception.
Maybe the global "default" is not enough for Rocket league to see controller when using virtual gamepad driver. afaiu all client controllers on RP host are seen by using virtual gamepad driver.
When you say "controller is detected correctly" by controller settings is not entirely true as Valve removed the layout mapping GUI in BP controller settings where we could make sure controller is mapped like expected before letting games apply game config. We used to also be able to save layout as any supported controller type - which fixed the bad "generic gamepad" in game button prompts if using an xbox or PS type controller especially when used as streaming client on device that i snot supported by steam client (i.e. Steam Link app). Often due to Steam Link app incorrectly mapping controller layouts client side the map layout function on streaming host was an uber easy way for Steam users to fix bad streaming client controller mapping.
Hopefully all you need to do is force Steam Input to ON, to get working controller in RL.
Steam Input is really buggy/broken just now as Valve are rebuilding it from ground up for adding support for Steam Deck controls. If you search the steam client beta forums folks are seeing issues with controllers being detected wrong and controllers not working in games.
Using Virtualhere will workaround any issues with virtual gamepad driver as this requires proper windows drivers if using windows host pc.

add the launcher or service to steam as non steam game, and map its controller for the launcher
Hey, I can tell you how I managed to fix my problem: I disconnected and reconnected the controller to the computer (this might not be necessery but I'll still say it since it worked for me), go to the steam library, right click on the game with the issue, click on manage, click on controller layout, then browse layouts and select and load an official one. This worked for me, then I simply changed back the key bindings in-game
