macos host, no audio in steam link

I have tried using steam link from my macos host to clients on appletv and raspberry pi.

in both cases gameplay is great, but no audio in steam menus or games. have tried multiple games.

have tried play host audio on and off.

audio on host and client is stereo.

steam link client plays sounds, but not steam big picture menus.

macos audio output is set to steam speakers.

set windows audio device to 'streaming speakers'

or if you want to play sound on both, uninstall streaming speakers, and turn up steam client volume on windows volume mixer

I found the solution to this, at least in my case. It doesn't make sense, but I had to toggle on allowing Steam access to the microphone in Settings -> Privacy & Security -> Microphone.

Why Steam needs access to the Microphone just to play audio via speakers, I don't know. But I tried everything else I could find online and could think of, and this was was what fixed it for me.

This is on an M2 Macbook Pro running Sonoma.
