How in the world do I use Steam Remote Play?
I know how to invite people for steam play, but how does my friend play the game they see?

After someone joins a Remote Play Together session the host (you in this case) will have a window in the Steam overlay that lets you assign controls to each connected player. By default it'll give the first person who joins the second controller, but you can also assign different controllers, or mouse/keyboard, if you need to.

I am trying to play a game like Overcooked with a friend.
I am not attempting couch coop, to clarify. On line coop.

How to assign mouse/keyboard?
All I could do is give keyboard/mouse permission.

To clarify in turn, as far as the game is concerned, Remote Play Together is couch co-op. Think about it like a really long controller and monitor extension cable that goes through the internet. You need to choose local multiplayer game modes to play with people when using Remote Play Together.

And did that not work?

Nope

Do you have co-op working locally using split keyboard, assuming that's what you're trying to do?

Getting it working without Remote Play Together is probably the best starting point.

By split keyboard, you mean the same keyboard?

Well what input devices are you and your friend trying to use? You asked about assigning keyboard/mouse.

We both have no choice but to use our own keyboards.
No controllers

Then yes, you need to figure out how to make Overcooked 2 work locally by sharing the same keyboard.

As I said above, Remote Play Together is local multiplayer. It's just a really long virtual extension cord.

When they accept your Remote Play Together invite they connect remotely to local virtual controls on your PC. They can then remotely control your local game.

In essence you're handing them a really long extension cord to plug a controller/keyboard/mouse into.

It works best with controllers because they can be individually assigned per player. Keyboard and mouse are trickier because there's only one keyboard input and one mouse pointer that has to be shared.

Fortunately in this case Overcooked 2 does support a single shared keyboard for multiplayer. The default controls are arrow keys plus right shift/alt/ctrl for player one, and WASD plus left shift/alt/ctrl for player two (according to this random site I just googled).

Shortest way to answer you is:

Player 2 mimics your Computer Setup for their own.
When you play with Player 2, they see exactly what you see.
