Does port forwarding help with RPT?
Dear Remote Play community,

My friends and I have been trying out various games in Remote Play Together with variable success. Some games seem to work quite well but have occasional lag spikes. I am looking for ways to smooth out the experience and was wondering if port forwarding can help improve latency.

Does anybody know if RPT benefits from port forwarding and, if so, what ports should be forwarded?

Thank you,
-Cay

Although specific ports are mentioned at https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=3629-RIAV-1617#networkports there is absolutely no indication or any recommendation or anything else that says forwarding those ports is helpful. Just checking firewall rules is recommended.

So good question. Port forwarding should help lower network latency but it opens those ports for all devices on that network. Your router may allow prioritisation of ports for specific apps to specific devices individually.

Also applying specific QoS rules enabled by the "prioritise network traffic" button can also help lower network latency Which is local network configuration related too, but no explanation or recommendation is shared in official documentation.

And using different DNS may help ensure Valves backbone is used as route to Valve servers.

Hopefully somebody else can help clarify how we can better optimise our local network if using a modern gaming spec router for Steam Remote Play.
