No sound in 'play together'
Hi

My pal has no sound when we try to play together. Is anyone else having problems like this? Is there a fix?

Thanks

Edit: It has been several months now and the issue seems to have solved itself somehow along the way. Or maybe a Steam update fixed it.

and first make sure the client has steam bootstrapper volume up in windows mixer
Just a tip if it hasn't been said already, I once again ran into the dumb thing where the first time you plug in your PS5 controller (or maybe any controller with a speaker and/or microphone in it) Windows will set the default audio and/or communication device to the controller. You'll then have to change your sound device to what you normally use. :steamfacepalm:

do I have to do that on the host pc or the player joining
In the past, we only had to make that change on the host pc.

So I just tried remote play on my Steam Deck with Crysis 2. The game play just fine but there is no sound from the game.

Thats because, the issue is...

You are running a Game from only 1 Computer...

Both Players see the same screen... But the Audio can only come out
of 1 or the other Computer...

Such as

1.) Host Computer
or
2.) Client Computer

Host is the PC running the Game...
Client is the Player on the other End...

There is no Option for Enable Sound on Both...

Somehow we need to Activate the Sound on the Host PC,
& then have the Client PC gain Access to the Audio from the Host...

Valve's Post about the Topic states that the Host can give Access to
Features that the Client can use, including Audio, but it also states that
we can restrict these Features, too... As in take them away, so my theory
is there is gotta be a setting somewhere we can give the Client PC Access
to the Audio on the Host PC... Just like we do with the Controllers,
Keyboard, & Mouse...

Good Luck...

I just got that bug
I get sound on both, with no way to turn it off on the host
I can turn sound of the client
But the host still keeping the sound

steam changed the capture method to work that way

with the streaming driver enabled as default, windows would only send sound to the client

now, just set the default speakers to what you use (disable or uninstall steam streaming speakers)
and just make sure to tick the play sound on host box
steam -> settings -> remote play
Since I had this problem, but I found it annoying that none of these replies give the full, un-abridged solution that worked for me...
In Steam **on the Host computer**, choose Steam-->settings-->remote play-->Host options: Advanced Host Opions-->Play audio on host (checkbox this).
This caused my client PC, i.e., the one streaming from the host, to finally start playing audio on the client. It makes no sense to me, because the box I checked is to "Play audio on host", but I don't want to play audio on host, I want to play audio on client. Nevertheless, that's what worked.

I also changed my Win11 PC audio from 24bit to 16bit, (taskbar audio icon right click\sound settings\advanced\more sound settings-->in the Sound popup window, select your output (mine was called 'Line Out 1/2', but for many people it will be something like 'Speakers' or 'Headphones') \Properties\Advanced\Default Format\'2 channel, 16 bit, 44100 Hz (CD Quality)'. But that didn't work by itself—maybe it was necessary in addition, though.

Not working, because the host won't let me hear sounds.

I also forgot to tell all of you: if you uninstall the steam service audio from your PC, you're unable to hear sounds from the host, which is a bummer because I uninstalled it like dumb a s s.

I know it fixed now, but the fix for me was to change the audio output lol

24bit works here
if it does not it may be audio drivers
get the correct ones from the mobo mfg or oem site
windows generic drivers often are missing features for specific devices

Changing to 16-bit audio format worked for me. Thanks

I still couldn't get it to work. I tried all the suggestions above.

so the person i was streaming with clicked turned down a volume meter at the start of streaming because it was really loud, and then the volume meter hasn't appeared ever again and now there has been no way for them to get audio again. we can't seem to replicate the appearance of this first volume meter
