I am on mac and had the same problem. To solve this your friend needs to go into his privacy settings and give steam access to audio and video screen recording. This fixed this problem on my end.

System Pref - Security and Privacy - Make sure steam has access to everything it wants. I feel like I got a pop-up at some point that asked "do you want to give steam access to screen recording" and I said yes.

I cannot find a screen recording option in the privacy tab.

When you created it or when the other person tried to join?

Tried it again and it works as long as it is in windowed mode, fullscreen causes the error

I tried all the suggested solutions, but nothing worked for me. Steam got all the access right in the security settings. And I tried to put the game in windowed mode.
It seems that steam on my mac does not see that I returned to the game, as the remote play screen shows me the message, that I am paused and I have to return to the game.
Anyone got any idea what else I could try?

I added steam into the 'Privacy' tab in the Security & Privacy (Mac OS) settings, I then changed the game from full-screen to windowed, and it works!

thanks
