Remote play vs in-home streaming
With Steam transitioning to remote play, it seems like it will not recognize that you're on the same network and use in-home streaming instead. My upload speed at my house is slow and ever since the "upgrade" it's been choppy even when I'm on the same network. Does anybody know of a way to use the old in-home streaming?

Direct is MUCH faster than relay (assuming you are connecting host/client in the same house)

I'm not sure if it was due to my new router modem (changed broadband provider) but the day after when I came to use my steam link, it was exceedingly slow and poor quality; a quick in built network test said it was barely hitting 3Mbs! I did my usual reboot of most bits of kit (powerline adapter, switch etc) and in the end it was the modem router itself (I have a separate router which handles all WiFi) that sorted it out. Long shot but worth a try?

In the performance overlay (F6) does it show Relay or Direct near the ping latency?

I had to enable the performance overlay in options first, but it shows Relay. I wonder if messing with the firewall options will allow it to switch to Direct?
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

OMG :steamhappy: It works like a charm!!!! Thank you so much!

So, it looks like I need to do this every time I restart. Is there a way to fix this permanently? Not a big deal, but just curious.

You can try uninstalling excessive network adapters? I.e., from virtual machines, VPNs, etc?

Desktop client still seems to switch to relay connections far too readily. Even without extra network adapters installed I get relay connections in locations where the Steam Link app is able to automatically find a direct connection no problem.

Then this needs to be filed as a bug to Valve

Yea lol. I give up. I have everything wired, with cat7 cables. I have tried the above. Doesn't work. I can stream from my laptop to desktop...which is useless. But from my desk to lap....unplayable. I may just buy an nvidia shield. I have done every trouble shooting step I can think of....even some I didn't think of. I have formatted both machines. Tried every setting, one by one, on and off. My ping is 2ms. Nothing works. It behaves the same way with wired and wireless...there is no difference. Sorry, streaming on steam is crapm
