In Home Streaming not connecting anymore
This is a new one for me... updated both installs of Steam, one on my gaming PC (Windows 10) and the other on my Macbook. Prior to this I was having no issues at all. Now, when I go to stream games from the PC to the Macbook the following happens...

I press Stream, screen on the Macbook goes black, game actually launches on the PC, Macbook dumps back to deskstop with a popup saying it cannot connect to streaming or to the remote computer. Game continues to run on the PC until I go to the PC and exit the game.

The game will consistently launch on the PC it just stopped streaming the experience to the Macbook. This worked last week and no network changes have been made. SteamLink to the TV works fine. SteamLink between Chromebook and PC works fine. Not enrolled in any betas...

Is this happening to anyone else or do we have suggestions as to what to do to fix it?

Thanks.

Same here. Win10 host and macOS client. Mainly used for playing SC2. Starcraft2.exe got the "cannot connect" errrors, then it worked sometimes with the Battle.net Launcher. But as of today that doesn't work anymore, either.

Starting Steam Host as admin doesn't help.

Same here, it's very frustrating. Mac / PC (Client / Host). Tried all kinds of settings. Used to work flawlessly. Surprised at Valve.

Interestingly, just discovered that going to Steam, Preferences, Remote Play and then selecting 'Fast' under 'Client Options' on the client helps in my case - I can now stream a game! I'm using the non-beta on both server (PC) and client (Mac). Connected over Gigabit ethernet.

Must be a timing-related bug? I hope Valve fix it soon. Was working fine on 'Balanced' fine prior to the recent updates.

I'm still getting screen tearing though, that was also working fine before the recent updates. Sigh. Sort it out please Valve!

Thank you! Choosing "fast" on my client worked for me too. I'm running OSX 10.14.5 on my client and Windows 10 on the host, and it wasn't working otherwise.

Client on Mac and host on PC. Chose "fast" setting, worked the second time I tried to stream.

Thanks for all the replies. I have been doing some testing and I have to unfortunately point the finger at the Mac. Every other device streams without an issue. I also think it might be timing related. I see the Mac dropping connection to the PC periodically. The Installed games list goes to just what's locally on the Mac and then repopulates with the games installed on the PC. If I happen to catch that I can usually stream after that.

I cannot, however, find a link or what is causing it. I want to say the latest OSX version of the client as I hadn't had that issue until I upgraded.

I am going to give the "Fast" option a try.

I still can't get any consistent functionality even with it set to Fast nor can I find a culprit. Every other device streams fine, from my Galaxy Note 9 to my Chromebook to my SteamLink hardware. The problem is definitely on the Mac and wasn't there prior to this version of software. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to when it decides to stream or when it decides to show me a black screen for 10 seconds and crap out.

This isn't a Mac only problem, it's a Steam problem. My host is Windows 10 and I have three separate windows 10 clients I connect from. Living room, master bedroom, and a laptop. This all started a few weeks ago after both a windows and steam update. I am fairly certain that the issue is on the host side too. My issues are random though it is more likely to not work than it is to work, it's exactly as you describe too. Try to launch, black screen, kicked back to client with error "couldn't connect to remote computer". But the game does launch on the host.

I have played around with connection settings, I have restarted the host and client, and I have checked various other settings. Some times it works, most of the time it does not. And when it does work I get random disconnects and reconnects during game play. That made me assume it was a switch or internal Network issue but test and constant pings indicate the problem is the host.

I updated drivers and ran more test without steam and I don't have any drops, with steam there are random drops.

Was starting to think I was crazy till I found this post.

You have got to upgrade that 8.1, you can still do it free with the windows Media creation tool. Just create a bootable drive, do a clean install, and it will activate when you log in

And just like that it all works again...
