Doki Doki LIterature Club HEAVY SPOILERS
If you haven't played the game don't read this. Seriously. Go play it. It's free, and will take only like 3-5 hours. Back? Okay, good we may commence.

It occurs to me that the game may have extremely minor meta yuri. META YURI. During the sequence where Monika is adressing you she does state she doesn't know that if you're a boy or a girl and then says that it doesn't matter. As we're now us, and no longer a stand-in this means that depending on the player this can technically constitute yuri. Not to mention it also opens up some food for thought about Monika's sexuality.

My dad works at Steam and he'll ban you if you don't agree with me.

By that logic then Monika isn't straight either. As you can't count yourself and it's you she loves. She is in love with... Nothing?

By playing the game, and engaging in a role that puts you into the game you're implicit in the story of it. Your role in the game is created by the developer so your role as the object of affection is the dev intention. If you are a girl the developer very much intends for Monika to be a big gay.

As much as she's in love with an ideal she's in love with you. Which can mean she's willing to love a girl as a consequence.

This makes me think about the are traps gay question.

Can you please not call them "Traps?" That word has some pretty transphobic connotations.
Kailally Nov 14, 2017 @ 2:42pm
Crossdressing doesn't equal transgender. I know, because I think crossdressing is wonderful, but I haven't transitioned.

It anything, saying that it's transphobic is transphobic as you have no idea of what a trans person actually is.
souryuu5 Nov 14, 2017 @ 7:48pm
The whole "trap" thing comes from the idea that some gay men pretend to be women in order to "trap" other guys into having sex with them. So the word "trap" carries the implication that crossdressers or transexuals are liars.

So please don't use that word to refer to crossdressers or transexuals.
Kailally Nov 14, 2017 @ 7:58pm
Why are you equating a crossdresser with a transexual? They are not the same thing. I like the idea of dressing up as a girl, and even have worn girl clothes before, but I am not a transexual at all. Well, yet. They are not the same thing.

And if I'm dressing up in girl clothes and parading around, I'll call myself whatever I damn well please.
souryuu5 Nov 14, 2017 @ 8:40pm
I'm not equating crossdressers with transexuals. I've mentioned that the term has been used to slander both crossdressers and transexuals, not that crossdressers = transexual.

You are free to call yourself whatever you want. I'm just asking you not to use that word in the forum because it's become a derogatory term and a slur.

It's not a slur. That's a disingenous view of the word. Not once have I ever seen it used to slur a trans person. If it was used that way that'd be delusional; as it has absolutely nothing to do with trans.

Furthermore, I do not stand by censorship of speech. I respect your decision to complain, but I absolutely do not agree with your view. Never would I ask anyone to stop using words. That is not an okay mindset to just start censoring left and right.

For the record, I haven't used the offending word since you asked me to stop. So don't just write me off as transphobic or something as I'm clearly respecting your request. Also,
no I'm not refraining from using the word because I think you're right, or I don't truly believe in what I'm saying, I'm not using it because I have a basic sense of empathy.
souryuu5 Nov 14, 2017 @ 9:02pm
Yes, it very much is a slur. It's not an acceptable word to use in any of the forums I frequent, much like how the n-word isn't allowed. Also, it's not censorship; it's asking someone not to use a word that carries very negative connotations.

Rantasmo, creator of the "Needs More Gay" series, explains why the term isn't a good one here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q78qaT8JZ_A

I don't know why you spoilered the last bit, but let it be known that I've never called you transphobic; I've just asked you to stop using a transphobic term.

This discussion is completely off topic, if you folks want to argue about political correctness do it somewhere else please.

In fact, I don't think there's anything more that needs to be said about the yuri content in DDLC, so this thread can probably be locked.

This is guy is making the exact same mistake you made when he's talking about trans women. A trap is not a trans woman. (sorry no way to get around using the word).

"Transgender characters, particularly trans women have an unfortunate history as being portrayed not only as objects of disgust, but of deceit."

Sure is a good thing a trap isn't a trangender person in any way shape or form huh?

"Their identities are used as plot twists, and in the most malicious of examples they're portrayed as traps."

In a vacuum it sounds relelvant, but within context this is against portraying a trans person as a trap, which again isn't the case when using the term. We aren't talking about trans people, we are talking about crossdressers. It might almost be mildly true that the word is offensive if we used the term to refer to a transperson, but we don't.

The forums you frequent are clearly quite different from mine where everyone says whatever the fuck they want, and they don't get crucified for hurting someone's feelings. This is literally what I was told when looking to get a second opinion on if I was wrong:
"A word is what people say it is and holds only the power they equate it to.
and even if I was offended...so what?
my offense means nothing"

I spoilered the text because it wasn't wholly relevant to the argument.

Finally, "Needs More Gay" isn't a very good title. I'd say "Wants More Gay" is a bit more accurate yea?

Both this thread, and the Insane thread are basically dead. They shouldn't just be locked, but nuked off the face of the earth. Dead threads that don't have any value shouldn't waste space.

I definitely prefer the forums I frequent in that case, since the stricter guidelines means assholes get whacked whenever they try to spew their homophobic, misogynistic, transphobic, and racist bile. So far, the forums have not yet degenerated into draconian places yet.

But yeah, I'm done getting off-topic, so I'll thank you for not using that term and let you go back to Siberia, Komrade KailnoSpaces. May your edukation there reinforce your kompassion, kare, and kourtesy towards fellow komrades in mother kountry.

Now, as for the game itself, I would definitely not consider it yuri, but I would definitely consider it a good game. Definitely a great example of how mechanics can help drive and reinforce a story, and its creativity with its game engine is a sight to behold. This is a game you definitely want to play with the game's local folder open.
