Project commentary

Votes were gathered on the following platforms:

• Reddit: 40 voters

There were two protest votes:

Following on from the favourite Gmod server poll, this poll to find the most popular maps seen in Gmod (regardless if they were originally designed for other games) helped direct archive efforts (knowing which maps were the most popular to write about). Although it didn't draw as much interest as the original poll - it was difficult finding respondents, and out of the 3 possible votes they only cast 2 votes on average, possibly because people don't remember specific map names. One of the respondents I chatted with said he couldn't remember most of the names of the maps he played on.

Barely one in ten Twitch streamers casted a vote, as they either didn't see the question, didn't play enough to have any favourites, or there was a language barrier. It was very slow getting responses when I asked players in Gmod servers, possibly because they were focusing on gameplay (or because I got shot, or the player I was trying to ask got shot). The rate of responses on YouTube and Discord were also low, so I didn't try on those platforms much. YouTubers were often FNAF enjoyers. Many votes came from reddit, but being banned from the Gmod subreddit (for posting a community Gmod video many years ago) made gaining votes there a slow process. While hanging out on VRChat I came across a friendly Gmod veteran, so got a vote from there.

The allowance of three votes per person was done because many of the server poll respondents wished they could have cast multiple votes, and it proved to be an efficient way to increase the pool of votes. Stranded maps were underrepresented because players forgot the map names from that early gamemode, and the map files themselves have more or less been lost. I wonder if TTT maps are underrepresented due to their poor quality despite players feeling nostalgia for them. It's possible that voters misremembered the names of maps, and in some cases didn't know the exact filenames.
