How hard was it when you came out as a furry to friends/family

So I decided I was a furry here recently and I’m not going to come out to anyone except one person who I think is a furry as well and if not he’s cool with it but I know it’s something that’s going to be hard to explain to parents and friends when the time comes so I wanted to hear some other people’s stories to know what to expect or what I could do to prevent everyone in my life disowning me lol

Edit- so I asked my parents to go to a fur meet Bc I’m not 18 yet and can’t make my own decisions and my dad said he doesn’t want me to and doesn’t care what I do after I turn 18 and a bunch of ppl told my mom it’s ppl who dress up as animals and screw each other so my moms scared and won’t let me go at all and probably will never want to hear about it again

Being a furry is just a hobby like any other. Try to Imagine coming out as a fisherman to your father, it makes no sense at all and would just be awkward.

Okay, if I am not too late..

I was really shy about "coming out". But as I finally got the courage and told my parents. I was surprised! My dad actually knew about furries! (Or sorta at least lol) But he was really understanding and accepting about it! Same as my mum but she had no idea, so I had to explained it to her. (Never came out to any irl friends yet though )

I have three people who I'd need to "come out" to (my husband is furry, so he's not included in the three). My mother has no clue what a furry is and doesn't seem to understand it very well. My sister knows and apparently had a clue (I'm assuming it's cos I really dig Rocket Raccoon and my mother assumed I just like Bradly Cooper). My brother I've no idea. Not even sure if he knows I'm dating a dude, but he never breaches those kinds of topics with me. He seems to act like I'm straight though (he's not completely wrong).

My sister was pretty chill with it but she's done a LOT of things, so she can't really be horrified without being hypocritical. My town's pretty narrow minded, so I just worry they'll assume furries are animal lovers in a bad way, if you get what I mean.

I'm pretty sure that I've given my close friends enough hints or situations that kind of show that I am one but then I dunno. They seem to be neutral or positive towards me during those times.

So yeah, my friends know my steam profile and that I have my avian sona on it everywhere but they don't know the fact that I am in this group, lmao.

My story is is very much complicated and yeah.. I started out as a full on hater of this community.. I think they already know or they might not that I am somehow a part of the community nowadays, but either way they're cool with it.

Ok so i finally opened up to my close friends IRL, and im really surprised they're good with me being a furry and they also stated that they support me all the way. Feels really good, a heavy weigh off my chest. I can finally just be me.

its almost funny you say that because i was called a dog rapist by my friend before i was a furry just bc the way i was playing with the dog so we have an inside joke about it which is IRD= i rape dogs hes a good friend just funny that im not the only one

My parents/family dont need to know. My parents dont even know what furries are.

Im not the one to come out about being a furry but I've been caught by old school "friends" before thanks to my steam profile and profile pictures on social media websites. Sadly I got made fun of and humiliated for it. At least being called bear boy was neat I guess :'v

Well actually at least w/ my mom I just had to do some slight explaining and she understood and was quite accepting. I was hesitant to tell my sisters as they didn't care for furries, but once they found out I was one, they seemed to not mind them as much. My dad still doesn't know though, but I do "casually" drop hints, hell ne time he even picked me up from this furry meet up place... He still didn't get it. Smh.

I just told my parents today. When I was coming home from swimming at night. we were talking about my birthday. I told my dad that I was in a project to make a costume and I need glow in the dark tape. He just listen and nod his head. Then I start getting deep and said about getting fur and where to find it. He said theirs a shop that sell fake fur and then we kept chatting back and forth. Then I mention " Do you know what a furry is? " he replied EXACTLY in these words " Oh yes. Is it those custom mascots? ". I mention I was a furry and he is not mad but supportive with my project.

Later i'm saying that its a hobby.

It's just a hobby. Not something to "come out" with. Once you realize that, then you'll see there's nothing to worry about. There's no need to go out telling everyone "hey, I'm a furry". It's even one of the reasons why people everywhere hate us so much: some furries become annoying doing that.

Anyone here already "came out" as a gamer? It's just a hobby! Geez, just be yourselves and relax.

Same for me. Some of my friends are even haters. And, in the end, it's pretty obvious that I'm a furry (I use different images of my sona in many places). But they're cool, because I'm not making a "tempest in a water bucket" out of it.
