Compatability issues
Hey guys so I've just discovered this game, and after installing it I'm having compatibility issues trying to run it. I start the game up, and at the opening menu after a few seconds the screen colors change to neon colors and everything becomes difficult to see, I've tried all the compatibility modifiers and none of them seem to help. I'm using Windows 7.

Hmm. I use Windows 7 as well. My start up issue is different though. For me it goes to a black screen when I start up and flickers like its trying to switch between colour modes. To fix it I tab out and back in (or use the short cut again) and it works fine.

Your issue sounds different but if you haven't tried this yet...

I've found when I tab out and back in, the colors revert to normal for a few seconds, but then they change back to the neon craziness.

To begin with,it helps to set the properties on the icon for the program to run in Win95 compatibility mode with 256 colors, 640x480 resolution both checked. Play with your program icon settings and see what works for you. Also, if you were unaware, you can tweak game settings through the .DAT files with a text editor, but you have to be very careful to keep the field spacing intact. They can also be edited with a modern spreadsheet editor such as Excel, but you stand a large chance of the program overwriting these field separations, so always make a backup before you start mucking about. Using this method, you can create all new units using existing portraits and icons. A great tutorial for this is at http://website.lineone.net/~rwein/nova/hacking.htm
There are also a few map editors out there from the development days of the game and several modders have done interesting things with complete overhauls. Look around the web, and have fun with this great game!

Window mode patch helps as well. There is a link somewhere in the discussions here. You might as well try it.

Might as well just bump an old thread on compatability.

I've got an issue. It's an issue I can't figure out for the life of me and I have not been able to fix it. When running EotFS in Windows 7 (no issue in starting it at all or having it run), I get a bad flickering effect throughout the game. Select a menu and you have to hover-find the option you're looking for.

I've tried all window based compatability settings to no effect. The windowed patch works properly, but moving the window crashes it and it also is far too small to use (25" 1920x1200). I do have multiple displays (have not disabled them as I'm hoping you have a solution before I try).

Anyone else encounter the flickering? My google-fu has failed me otherwise.

When I play with the windowed mode on I just manually set my desktop resolution to 720p. It looks OK on a 23 inch monitor then.

It's a finicky game that's for sure.

The problem is I can't move the window or it will crash. I would just move it to my 32" tv that is already 720p.

So far, just resind to playing it on window mode on my tablet. ASUS Vivotab Note 8 with the window patch (resolution is 1280x800 so it's not too bad... but it is hard to see without having it close). I use the pen (acts as a mouse) and it works fine.
Did this with Imperialism 1 & 2 (that can be played in every way with just touch, except for map scrolling. Must use your finger on mini-map in order to jump around).

No one have the flicker issue? Everyone just plays with the window patch? Ah well. Thanks for the heads up, imperialus. Your let's plays got me into actually finding and trying this out (had heard of it and looked at it, but never went and grabbed it).
