Post newly-discovered games here
This thread is for newly-discovered DRM-free and client-free games, so put what you find in the comments below. I'll post my own comments to let you know that the wiki page has been updated!

Also, it seems like if you copy and paste the Steam store page URL into your comment, it'll give you a really nice link to the page itself, with a preview of the game, and everything (as you can see in many of the comments below). It's a really nice visual cue, so I recommend doing that whenever you find a DRM-free game.

PLEASE MAKE SURE you specify the operating system on which you tested the game. Not all games are created equally, and some games have versions that are DRM-free on one OS but not on another. Also, remember to do a quick check on the wiki page to see if the game is already listed there.

Yeah, it's not all of them. It's just weird how many it HAS worked with. Either way, I'll take a few over none. (And honestly, I'm glad Denuvo got removed from Nier at all, because it really seemed like they were just going to ignore that game forever.)

The Excavation of Hob's Barrow (Windows tested) is DRM-free.

Goat Simulator 3 (Windows) is DRM-free, and there's a neat little trick that you can do with it: Like a lot of other DRM-free Steam games with DLC, the in-game content from the Digital Downgrade DLC is normally not accessible without running the game through Steam. However, if you run the game through Steam once and start a game, the in-game content from the Digital Downgrade DLC is unlocked and saved to your individual save file, and that content will actually work outside of Steam from that point forward!

I have a small update for this game. I finally got around to trying it out (there were some mods I wanted to try for this game). While the game is drm-free, I found that I needed to use the steam_appid.txt trick in the <game directory>\Sifu\Binaries\Win64\ directory in order to start the game without Steam starting up.

Oh, interesting, I wonder if it worked for me without that file because I test my games by renaming the main Steam .exe so it can't find Steam to launch it at all. I'm going to have to try that with Sifu and a couple other games, just to see if that's the consistent way that steam_appid.txt games work.

Some sad news: Remnant 2 is no longer DRM-free.

Some tests I've been making with some games I own and got awesome results for us that enjoy to backup our games offline:

True DRM Free are games with really no Client dependency.
Workahound DRM Free are games that have only the Client dependency and can be played with workahounds.

(Sorry if some of them are already in the list. I placed them here and got kinda lazy to check one by one, I admit. xP Anyway, hope it may help. Take care!)

All of them were tested in a fully offline Windows 10 20H2 machine.

Um... exactly what "workarounds" are you referring to?
CheeseBoar May 6, 2024 @ 6:14am
I also need to ask for clarification on the workarounds you're referring to with those games. If you're talking about cracking the DRM, then that's not what we're keeping track of in this group. If you're talking about something else, then I'd love to hear specifics, because I have quite a few of the game you listed, and having them DRM-free would be great.

I just got done testing the Devil May Cry HD collection. The steam_appid.txt trick didn't work. I've even tried renaming the steam.exe file, and that didn't work for the collection. I too would be interested in the other person's "workarounds".

At least I don't think that is considered cracking:

Steamless
Goldberg Emulator

Are you guys against using those?

Goldberg and Steamless are third-party programs that bypass or outright remove DRM from games, so in this situation of trying to test games out of the proverbial box, they're cracking the DRM, yes.

No problem, I'm not accusing you of anything. But for our purposes here, were trying to see what games will run without Steam without having to resort to third-party methods of removing DRM; otherwise, there wouldn't really be a need for this group.

Speaking of that, though, I'm curious about you mentioning Portal 2 as being truly DRM-free. Did you do anything special to make it work? I got it to launch without Steam, but it tells me to quit and run it through Steam once I get to the title screen.

I had a suspicion that's what you were using. Yes that is considered cracking. Please don't discuss that in this group or Steam in general.

This actually makes think that perhaps the method you found of using 7zip could be considered cracking too? Cause it's using a third party software.
