The funding supports the current stage of development — visual readability and accessibility in low-light environments, while reducing visual noise and other barriers for visually impaired and neurodivergent players.

Accessibility has been part of ROGUEFLITE Extraction’s design from the beginning. The game has no text or voiceovers and instead focuses on light, shape, motion and consistent environmental feedback to communicate gameplay. Secondary channels such as colour, sound and UI provide additional reinforcement without being relied upon, as not every player can see, hear or interpret these cues.

Combined with single-session runs, subtle background onboarding and a focus on learning through play, players are optionally eased back into the experience every time they play. This reduces reliance on memorisation and provides a low barrier to entry for both new players and those returning after a long break.

As a neurodivergent game developer myself with varying disabilities, inclusion is extremely important to me. I firmly believe that games can still be challenging, exciting, tense and atmospheric while removing barriers to entry for players who struggle with traditional systems. It’s rewarding to know that Screen Australia and the Australian Government are willing to support development in this area.

This funding from Screen Australia allows me to spend more time developing and testing these key foundational design goals, along with the overall look and feel of ROGUEFLITE Extraction.
