HOW TO INSTALL ACE'S CROSSHAIR AND OTHER CUSTOM CROSSHAIRS IN TOONHUD! (Please Release It, Ace.)
Hello. You may remember me as the creator of that AWFUL replica of Ace's crosshair. However, tonight, I have figured it all out. In this thread, I will instruct even the most senseless TF2 players on how to install Ace's Crosshair (Please release it. Please, Ace. I love that crosshair. You don't even have to make a guide, I made it for you.)

So, you want to install Ace's Crosshair. First off, you may be asking, "Why is Ace's crosshair unique?"
Well, unlike most custom crosshairs, it can be used on sv_pure servers, like casual servers. The way he achieved this is that he tricked his custom HUD, ToonHUD, into displaying his crosshair instead of the crosshair included with the HUD. This is what I aim to achieve with this guide.

YOU REQUIRE VTF EDIT. DOWNLOAD IT BEFORE DOING THIS.

Step 1: First, download ToonHUD. If you want an authentic Ace look, download his ToonHUD theme, BLU PRIME, here: https://toonhud.com/user/aceocarinas/theme/SBIGHNKP/

Step 2: Have your custom crosshair you want to insert into ToonHUD in vtf format. I'm not going to go over it in this guide, but you can find it in a quick google search.

Step 3: Extract the downloaded zip file to the desktop and open it up. Go to this file address:
Desktop/toonhud/materials/vgui/replay/thumbnails/xhairs

Step 4: You should see a bunch of files named something along the lines of xhair1.vtf, xhair2.vtf, etc. Open them using VTFEdit, which you should have if you're dealing with Custom Crosshairs.

Step 5: Then, go back to the ToonHUD customization page and compare the choices of each crosshair to the vtf file. If there's a match, keep that file name handy. Once you did that for all the ToonHUD crosshairs you have on in that theme, grab the files you have on hand and set them off to the side. Then, replace the files with YOUR custom crosshair files. BE SURE TO NAME THEM THE EXACT SAME THING THEY WERE ORIGINALLY NAMED, CAPITAL SENSITIVE. Example: If I replaced the file xhair28.vtf, name the custom crosshair vtf file xhair28.vtf.

Step 6: Once you have done that, drop the ToonHUD folder into your TF2 Custom folder and test your crosshair.

If it works, good for you! Enjoy the crosshairs!

If it doesn't work for you, make a comment on this post and I'll help you!

And by the way Ace, keep up the great content.

What if i have only one crosshair file?

For that, you'll have to edit the ToonHUD presets to have 3 crosshairs unless you don't want multi-color and hitmarkers, then you replace them with the vtf files like normal.

Here's some pictures so you can follow it easier.

Go to the ToonHUD website (toonhud.com) and follow their instructions to make a theme, or just take Ace's theme (BLU Prime)

Then, copy it to your own ToonHUD profile if you took Ace's theme (you'll have to log into ToonHUD w/ your Steam account) so you can edit it.

While editing, scroll down to the bottom and you'll see this: https://imgur.com/a/HyxDXbu
Make each crosshair a different color, and preferably, choose the ones that I did, so it's a bit easier.

Here's each one I picked - you may have to scroll to see them in the list.
Blue: https://imgur.com/a/oBsApYK
Green: https://imgur.com/a/EcotnDd
Red: https://imgur.com/a/6JAAfiE

Save the theme and then download it.

Then, go to the file path toonhud\materials\vgui\replay\thumbnails\xhairs within the downloaded folder.

If you used the exact same crosshairs as I did, the files you're looking for are titled:

xhair31.vtf for the Blue crosshair

xhair5.vtf for the Green crosshair

xhair9.vtf for the Red crosshair

This next step is the most important step.

If you want Ace's crosshair, you can get my more advanced recreation's vtf files here: {Ο ΣΥΝΔΕΣΜΟΣ ΑΦΑΙΡΕΘΗΚΕ}

If you're using your own custom crosshair, ignore that link.

If you already have your custom crosshair in vtf format, ignore this step.
If you don't have it in VTF format, download VTFedit and import your custom crosshair that should be in image form into the program and export it as a .vtf file.

Now, you're ready to begin. If you downloaded the crosshair from my link, toss the files that are in the downloaded zip file into the aforementioned xhairs file path and say yes to the "Replace these Files?" message that comes up.

If you did not download that crosshair, you need to be a bit more careful. Take the three pieces of your crosshair and rename them to the correct file names which are the xhairY.vtf (where Y is the number associated with the color) which are up above. Then, drop them into the file path.

Reply back if you have any more questions :)

Edit: It appears my download link was removed by Valve. Oof. I'll try to figure something out.

I used the GIMP program personally since you can make your own or import images of other crosshairs and edit them, like I did with Ace's crosshair to recreate it.

If you want to make your own:
download GIMP and go File -> New

Set both width and height to 64x64, since that's the size that most TF2 crosshairs are made at.

Go to Advanced Options without pressing the Ok button, since that will create an image without transparency, resulting in a colored box that you can't see through with your crosshair drawn on top of it.

Instead, once you click on Advanced Options, click on the Fill With dropdown box, and set it to Transparency, like this: https://imgur.com/a/zHAP1se. Then, click okay and just experiment with drawing your crosshair.

If you want to make them multicolored like the ToonHUD crosshairs, make sure to make the crosshair white so that it can change the crosshair to any color you set it to..

A good way to make a crosshair that is multicolored, but flashes the same color as a hitmarker, similar to Ace's is to create the whole crosshair first, save that, then erase part of it and save that separately, then erase the other part and save that separately as well. What you just did is created 3 separate image files - in the case of Ace's crosshair, the first one will be the red hitmarker, and the other 2 will be the multicolored parts, if that makes any sense. View the imgur files below to get a better sense of what I mean if that doesn't make sense to you.

Also - instead of a mediafire download, just download these Imgur posts if you want Ace's crosshair.

Is it possible for you to make everything the same as ace's crosshair but instead of the brackets there will be this box https://imgur.com/B5Lc8H7 But if you can't that's fine you already helped me alot. :)

Does this work?
You'll need to erase the inside crosshair to create the outside box since I had to scale it up to make the crosshair fit inside the box.

For future reference, you can use the Export as PNG in VTFEdit to turn the crosshairs from .vtf to .png, then you can use Open as Layer in GIMP to layer several images.
It worked so well!. Thank you again you made my day i wanted a custom crosshair for so long and you made it happen. Thank you! :D

Hey, sorry for taking so long to reply. I haven't checked my messages in a long time. In VTFEdit, hit import and then select the png file and save it as .vtf.

I think mine is the max of 32(?). It really doesn't matter, it's all trial and error until you get something that works.

I'll consider it since it's a fairly complicated topic and just explaining it is difficult in of itself.

how do u mean replace with vtf version of this??????
The ToonHUD folder has the xhair__.vtf files. VTF is valve texture file and it's basically the image that loads for the crosshair. The way it works is that you program the ToonHUD theme to use specific crosshairs, then go into the ToonHUD files and replace the crosshairs that it's programmed to use with Ace's crosshair.
