Is the Hotline Miami series woke?
https://store.steampowered.com/app/219150/Hotline_Miami/
https://store.steampowered.com/app/274170/Hotline_Miami_2_Wrong_Number/
- Anti-war
- Broad anti-violence message (not necessarily right or left wing in nature)
- Nihilistic(?) philosophy, open to interpretation
- 50 Blessings, an anti-Russian ultra-nationalist terrorist group which the protagonist of the first game carries out his killings for, due to Russia killing the protagonist's best friend in a nuclear bombing , and in the second game is responsible for the assassination of the US President and Russian President, which causes World War 3 and Nuclear Holocaust
- In Hotline Miami 2, there are two playable female characters, however they die in the first mission fighting experienced gangsters instead of hobos
- The "Jake" character from Hotline Miami 2 is a neo-confederate
- Developers funded an LGBT video game convention, [www.polygon.com] though there's no LGBT present in Hotline Miami.

I also found this on another Steam post discussing the game's political alignment:

This game clearly doesn't have a political view. All people of all walks of life and view are present, and none of them are critiqued. Sure, 50 Blessings was violent and caused the end of the world, or at least America and Russia. But think about what situation they're in. Russia nuked one of their most populous cities. There's a decent chance someone they (A member of 50 Blessings) cared about died in the blast. They took one of their islands, and now their people are flooding their country. All the while this happened presumably after only 40 years prior their parents, maybe even grandparents, bravely fought ALONGSIDE them. It's betrayal. I think it's more philosophical, echoing Grandfather's words from the first game, "Nothing seems to matter anymore, does it?"
What do you guys think? I personally played both games and I'm not sure. Obviously the game is trying to tell you 50 Blessings is bad, but that's a terrorist group instead of a portrayal of the mainstream right-wing.

Why? Is it because of the portrayal of Jake? Or the ending, maybe?

I don't think it's woke, and i think you've got the story wrong
I think the game is just absolutely ambiguous, and supposed to make you think. Nothing wrong with that, not woke.

None of the Hotline Miami games spit out the creator's opinions to your face. Story makes you think about eternal things, not current moment ones. This is the opposite of modern activism (no matter from which side). None of the "left-progressive" themes were noticed by me also. Both games are 100% clean imo.
All I needed to know to never buy it
