I don't exactly consider Synthetic Man to be a reliable source of information, but here I do agree with him about the indie games market.
Especially for very small studios, if you read the "about us" information provided on a small studio's itch.io page or on their website, then compare the information shared there with the content in some (or potentially all) of their games, it becomes clear many stories, characters, and themes are simply based on them and their life experiences (self-inserts).
In other words, like Synthetic Man mentioned in the video linked here, it would appear these people are not making games for us (the public at large), they are making games for themselves.
1. most authority characters are female: high confessor, main villain, purple “super god” (as Synthetic Man calls her), the mayor of Pwyll, the Pwyll harbormaster, the chief engineer of Erudite Academy.
2. a potentially jarring amount of “they/them” pronouns used in dialogue to refer to people that should have a known sex.
For example, when talking to the first map-making academy scholar you encounter, this character is at first referred to as “he” but then switches to “they/them” pronouns later in the same conversation. Later dialogue options switch back to “he.” I’m not sure whether this is intentional or an error.
3. multiple LGBTQ+ npcs. As mentioned in the video, the npcs Horace and Sammol are gay. Horace mentions his desire to perhaps get married to Sammol and petition so they can adopt:

There is also an npc that is described in a way that insinuates that he/she is non-binary:

I'll update this post (and the curator review too if necessary) as I keep looking into the game.
