Figma vs Scale Model
One of the first questions I ran into when buying my first figure was what the difference between a figma and a scale model are. I found a good answer from Ringking copied below:

"Figma's are basically the action figures of anime models, they have joints and sockets so that you can pose them. Scale figures (and indeed, non-scales) are a solid cast, some parts are removable or can be changed on some of them, but the overall model pose cant really be changed. As a result, they dont have any of the unsightly joints."

Do you have a preference of one over the other?

I tend to favor PVC figures as they have clean lines and with no joints. My wallet certaintly hates this preference though as PVC figures are almost always very expensive. Plus the fact that they are usually bigger in size, it is harder to find proper display or storage solutions.

I do like certain figmas though. Mainly ones where there are lots of accessories such as weapons/armor involved where you can change the visual appearance/impact of the figma. Nothing feels nerdier than custom posing your figma, but the ability to set your figma to a pose that best reminds you of your favorite character is very awesome. I dislike figmas of characters in basic outfits (school uniform) as the joints stand out too much and screams "toy" instead of a display item.

It depends on the subject. Personally, if it is a human character, I'd go for the PVC; whereas, if it's an Eva unit or some kind of mech, I'll go for the ability to pose it.

That is a good point about posing mech figures. Some of the companies who primarily make mech figmas will make the occasional Saber (as all companies have made a Saber it seems) and the waist will have a visible space allowing for the figma to be posed. This looks fine on a robot but completely artificial and unsightly on a human figure.
