Open your social window (the hot key can be found by going to Options, then Key Bindings).
There is also a icon on the side of your mini map, right center, that looks like 3 people together). Scroll down till you find who you are looking for, in the locations column next to their location is a number, eg, # 3 or # 8 . This tells you what instance they are in. Each location has multiple instances depending on how many players are currently there in all of STO.

A more populated map, like the Dyson Sphere Battlezone or Earth Space Dock, can have upwards of 20 instances running at one time. When changing instance, it will tell you which instance currently has a friend or fleetmate in it. A greyed-out instance means it is full, and to join it you will have to wait until someone leaves it.
