Help with controls and possible thrust glitch???
I got the "Until the 14th of Febuary" free pass to the aplha. And I love it, the controls are a bit confusing (Expecially for the controller, which is what I'm using.) But I think I'll figure it out eventually. But I have 2 major problems. Thrust and strafing. How the hell do I strafe??? My only method of movement is moving forward, turning my left thumbstick left or right to move in those directions, and the same for up/down. I still haven't figured out strafing.

I would do the flight tutorial ingame. But for some reason, it keeps freezing. Not in a lag kind of way either. Cause with lag, the sound would continue as normal, and video would be choppy, making them out of sync. With this, it just kept freezing.

So could somebody PLEASE teach me your wisdom and tell me how to strafe left, right, and ESPECIALLY up and down? (For landings, closest thing I got to a landing was parking my Aurora slightly above a landing platform so I could get onto a constelation. I failed to board the constelation by the way, and couldn't get back into the Aurora cause of the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ on foot controls in space. STOP SPINNING DAMNIT!!!!)

My second issue is thrust. Now. I have 3 ships, the Auroa, the Hornet, and the Mustang. (I assume I have the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ version of all, since I'm a lowly f2p n00b.) And with all of them, the fastest thrust I can get to (Other than the hyper- I MEAN QUANTUM JUMP) is 50. Which is barely anything. I'm on controller, so I'm holding down right button to go faster, nothing. So is this another on the game's many bugs? Am I just stuck with 50? Or is there a modifyer or something I have to press to go faster? (In the case of the latter. WHAT ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥♥♥ THOUGHT OF THAT!!!???)

Again, I'm on controller, so explinations will work a lot better with that. Or telling me what command to look for in the control scheme. =P

Flight sticks are typically designed to fly things that are in atmosphere. Six degrees of freedom on a joystick, as you can imagine, is not common enough to warrant them to create tons of hardware to accomodate it. That said, Saitek/Mad Catz are creating a Star Citizen HOTAS that is said to be good for 6DOF. I highly recommend waiting until reviews are in before you decide to buy it though.

Because you do not have six degrees of freedom, you need to ask yourself: which is most important to me. Is rolling important? Yaw? Pitch? You can access your keymapping by pressing ESC while in game, then going to your control settings, select your controller (HOTAS) and then go from there.

Typically, good pilots that use HOTAS will map strafing left, right, up, and down to the joystick and forward acceleration to the throttle. I've seen many people not do this (heck, I've seen people use steering wheels in this game), but this is pretty typical. Rolling isn't very important in space.

In order to accelerate faster then 50 meters per second, press V when your throttle is above 50% to change from precision mode to cruise mode to super cruise mode. Press it when it's below to change back down. I do not know what this is mapped to on the HOTAS, so you will have to map it yourself.

I am a mouse and keyboard user first and foremost. I find it easier then HOTAS. This isn't the fault of CIG, more the fault of how it isn't common for games to involve 6DOF. Companies have yet to figure out what is a comfortable way to approach this problem. Once they figure out what to do, I'll look at switching to HOTAS. Until then, I do recommend a M+KB set up for maximum responsiveness in your game.

Okay, I'm just looking for what the strafe buttons are mapped to. And I use a controller because I'm left handed, and find using a controller a lot easier for games like this than remapping the gajillion keys especially when I prioritize exploration and stuff like that, rather than combat. =P But I'm having trouble doing stuff like landing, cause I can't move down. lol. I'll try finding what action the V key and strafe keys are mapped to, and find those actions on the controller. =P I'm thinking of getting a dual joystick setup for the game once I have a better computer, instead of my freind's, and have the money to get 2 joysticks. Is that a good idea? Left for movement, right for camera, like controller.

I'm not entirely sure. I know a few people who use dual joysticks but I've never tried it myself. You're asking me for my advice as someone who is left handed and uses controllers when I'm right handed and use mouse and keyboard, haha. =P

Would you like a link to a forum that you may be able to ask for advice on this?

Sure, thanks for the help. Again, I'll try to find what action the strafe and V keys are mapped to, and find that action on the controller. =P

FIGURED IT OUT. I hold left trigger and press A to go faster, and use the right thumbstick to strafe.

That can work. Whatever works for you.
