Project Dreamland - A mod for Area 51 that restores the multiplayer and brings mod tools.
Download the Game Here

Well after on and off development, I finally have a presentable build to release to the general public.

Area 51 is a game created by Midway Austin in 2005; it was pretty well received during its lifetime, however with the death of gamespy and lack of updates it understandably had a short shelf life.

So seeking to breath some new life into it I've fixed a plethora of the bugs left in the game, and of course, restored the multiplayer component.

So I'm inviting you all to come play, give your feedback and of course help with bug finding! Mod tools are being actively developed, as well as dedicated server support.

The game also features a fully fledged campaign which is actually playable now, and with the support of modern aspect ratios more greatly appreciated.

You can of course find all this over on Github

So what is included in this release?

- King of the Kill
- Team Deathmatch
- Deathmatch
- Infection
- Map voting
- Basic stat saving
- Fixed multiple bufferoverflows
- Multiplayer systems emulated .
- Multi-core support
- Crash issues on modern GPUs fixed
- Fixed FOV
- Fixed frame stuttering issues
- Fixed random campaign crashes when it comes to cut scenes
- Fixed memory leak caused by improper BINK implementation
- Addressed security issues present in the default game

You can find links to download here

[And of course mod tools]

which if you'd like to help develop, feel free to contribute. The more people helping the quicker it will get done!

Of course if you have any questions, feel free to ask them or tweet at me

In addition, for those of you who actually still own this game on disk for the PS2/Xbox; I'll be working on a short guide on how to patch the game to work with my servers, it is cross play enabled so you will be able to play with pc players on console.

This looks like really cool stuff for owners of Area 51! :) I'll leave it all here so you can do some advertizing! haha :P

Now when it comes to gathering players for it...as it is a mod it would normally belong into our mod-themed sister group. Have a look here: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/ResurrectDeadMPMods
If you want, reach in your mod there to get it fully featured and become moderator for it! :) Suggestions work 100% same as here.

Hey Andrew, is this still working? I'm getting an 'unable to connect to gamespy' error in the game.
Andrew Apr 18, 2017 @ 4:08am
Sadly not Demon, because it barely gained traction I shut down the multiplayer part of it. I plan to release the backend open source soon though.

Ah, alright. So if I'm not mistaken, you wrote your own gamespy emulator? Not openspy? How did you handle account creation? The PS2 version of the game had some non-standard protocol for it, and ~february this year, players were no longer able to create them even when connecting to openspy.

Yeah I wrote my own, is there a big community I just missed with this project? If so I can always dedicate some time to fixing stuff on my end and putting it back up for the public.

Well the PS2 version of the game is quite popular still, particularly in Latin America (and by that I mean ~2dozen interested people, it's nowhere near SOCOM levels popular). Right now, the mysterious loss of the ability to connect to the openspy servers without having an account that's been online before is preventing newcomers from playing. I'm not sure if it used the same protocols as the PC version however. Upon connecting, it makes a //valid// call + what looks like an encryption key.

I can tell you openspy is just a bad platform all together, I crashed it awhile back while doing some testing and I found that passwords are stored in plaintext. That is why I decided to write my own.

I will try to get it back up for all of you so you have a dedicated area 51 master server.
Hello, I'm sorry for climbing a topic so old, but I have the game Area-51 and I play until today, I was very sad about the death of "gameSpy" and can not have more fun at night.
I wonder if this Mod still works in multiplayer?
Thank you.

Yeah, just point everything in the game executable to openspy.org.

How would I do that?

Is there a way to fix the infinite verifying files issue when I launch the Area51-Launcher? I know this is a bit of an old topic but I still thoroughly enjoy this game and would appreciate any help if possible.

For those who get stuck on Verifying files:
Go to the game folder > resources > app > game, and create shortcut for A51.
On the new shortcut add following: --launcher
It should look like this https://prnt.sc/ly6f7q
Now run game from new created shortcut.

Thank you. This procedure made the game work. However the multiplayer mode is offline, I found it strange because the author reported having reestablished the multiplayer. Any news about multiplayer being available?

You need to use OpenSpy
Download this executable and swap the one in the 'game' directory out with it - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1rIQJCTYb6VLY74REQxyASqUpMiKKelaX/view?usp=sharing
