Saving custom animations?

if u mean save it in a .dmx and then reuse it another sfm project yes, it's possible:
just right click on the model-->Export-->Animation
done!
if u mean create ur own "sequences" then u need to recompile the whole model... but for that u need to ask someone else...

Well not always, because I was animating a character of css in SFM and only let me export the facial animation, and that that has no facial animation models.

If its a rig you have to detach the rig after you finished the animation. Then do model-->Export-->Animation.
