Saints Row IV: Mulitplayer with Windows-Users
Hi,

I bought the Saints Row IV for Steam OS. Yesterday I wanted to play with a friend, but then the message appeared that we must have the same version of the Saints Row.
But we have the same version and the same Dlcs of the game. The only difference is that I'm playing steam os and my friend on Windows 10.

Could not the steam users play with Windows-Users? :steamsad:

Thanks for helping!

Depends on the game, how they have done the network code and compatible version checking.
Here, it appears that the games consider themselves to be of different version - maybe they calculate a checksum over the binary, that would throw it off.

Thanks for answer!
That means in general I can play with Windows-Users but in this case Saints Row IV isn't configured for a muliplayergame between Steam OS and Windows?

It appears so, based on what you said. From my experience, some games, e.g. the Wargame series work well (all of them did not initially, but they fixed it). Some worked well from the start, but then broke in an update (e.g. Dying Light). Some do not work, and it is even announced, intentional.

I think generally "most" work, but it is not guaranteed - they might work by chance (devs did not happen to code anything which is incompatible), or by design (devs knew to avoid things which cause incompatibilities).

Yeah, it would have to be binary string mismatching without a doubt. validation with checksum or hashing isn't panning out. The interop between the two games should be translated on the server eliminating this type of incident, but that translates into overhead at the processing level, lag (no matter how small) and additional power consumption all with a final price tag attached.

H3ll, it's tough to get a game rolling with other players using Windows 10 for me in Windows 10 as it seems every 10 to 15 minutes something goes ape, or bass fight glitches result in a run of about 10 or more attempts to complete a mission. Fun game, but the issues are many even when considering the same O.S. -it would certainly be h3ll on earth for Windows <> Linux cross over I'd imagine.

Haven't tried SR 3 or 4 in Linux yet myself. Still wrestling with an openAL update in Arch that broke my Borderlands 2 and can't seem to find the the older openAL libs anymore in the repo or aur. Strange

Anyhow, take care.

Noticed this comment, and decided to update my previous answer: Dying Light now again works between windows and linux, the devs fixed it.

for saintrows have the guy on windows host it instead of Linux and it works. (or was it the other way around?) I have nto played the game in a while, but it was one or the other to make it work.

Good to know. That can indicate that either the client or the server is hardcoded to accept only a certain kind of connection - one where either the server or client can be recognized to match the windows version checksum. Now... would a linux to linux multuplayer work, if that is the case..-

Yeah Linux to Linux worked last time I tried it.
