GUIDE TO DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL THIRD AGE MOD
Hi everyone,
Welcome to my second guide. This is for third age, it is a lord of the rings based mod and has been voted the best mod for any total war game ever by many people. Even though i barely know anything about LOTR, it is still a fun mod, and unlike stainless steel, it is a complete overhaul of vanilla

To start: download Part 1 and Part 2 from here.
http://www.moddb.com/mods/third-age-total-war

put them in a folder somewhere like so (ignore the SS files)
http://prntscr.com/527t90

after this, right click 'run as administrator' on the part 1 of 2.exe file.
run the setup. it will automatically be put into the SEGA directory, you must change this. the directory will be OS:C (or your harddrive) >program files>steam>steamapps>common>m2tw>mods
install the file.
do the exact same thing for the part 2 of 2.exe and also the patch 3.2.exe file (the other file). make sure it is in the directory as specified above.

once these are all installed, go to the directory you installed it to.
there might be another folder in mods called 'mods' go inside it and move whatever is in there into the main mods folder (m2tw>mods) and delete the other mods folder inside 'mods'.
the file inside this should be called Third_Age_3 or something like that.

rename your least favourite kingdoms campaign (i did british isles because americas was taken up by SS) to something random, and change the third age folder to the previously named kingdoms campaign, so in my case, i changed it to 'british_isles'.

to play it on multiplayer with each other you must have replaced the same kingdoms folder or the game will not allow you to play with each other.

Hello!
Can you verify the links provided? Once I click on download, I've got an error message
Thank you

Is it an error in browser or in the downloads bar that asks if you want to keep the file?

I can download them fine. Can you give me the details of your error message? What it exactly says?

I did this method a while ago and it worked. I have followed it again and when i go to launch the kingdoms campaign for the third age mod, the game doesnt start and says 'missing executable'

Did you delete the extra mod folder? I'll try to do some more research on this, but if it worked before I would recommend uninstalling and carefully reinstalling. None of the other kingdoms campaigns crash?

I cant launch the game full stop. I have uninstalled and reinstalled 3+ times. Hmmmm :(

Is your game via Steam or still running off discs? What operating system do you have? Do you mean you have uninstalled and reinstalled the entire game (not just mod) three times? Wow. I'm sorry.

My game is a steam copy and windows 7. I have uninstalled everything and even redownloaded the files for the mod again. Ive tried different methods and they all dont work :(. No worries dude :)

Another useful instruction from the Medieval II discussion forum to help with installs:

hippocampalKitten (j) has Medieval II: Total War 3 hours ago
http://www.moddb.com/mods/third-age-total-war

1. Download 3.0 part 1, part 2, and the 3.2 patch

2. Install 3.0 part 1. Install to Medieval's main folder

3. Install part 2. Install it to Medieval's main folder as well.

4. *Not entirely sure on this one; it's been a bit* - Install the 3.2 patch to your TATW folder in Medieval's "mods" section.

5. Rename your TATW folder to americas, british_isles, crusades, or teutonic. Save/ rename your original Medieval 2 DLC folder if you wish to keep it.

6. Start M2:TW via Steam. You should see a prompt asking you which campaign you want to play. Select the campaign associated with your renamed TATW folder.

I woul like an answer to this, As I have a Windows 8 and would like to get this mod.
Is this going to be a pain for me like everyone else if I get it on steam, or should I use a disc?

Alernate posted in main forum - copy here:

How I Installed Third Age (Third Age Installation Guide for steam users)
Hello all! THIRD AGE how I installed and all that stuff for steam. Moving on.

0.5. Backup your Medieval II folder. (Computer > Local Disk (C:) > Program Files (x86) > Steam > SteamApps > common > Medieval II Total War) I just copied and pasted it somewhere else. You don't have to do this, but I get paranoid sometimes. :P Comes with installing mods alot I guess. Again, this is optional.

1. Go to Moddb and install the appropriate files. (part 1 of 2, part 2 of 2, and the 3.2 patch if you want it) http://www.moddb.com/mods/third-age-total-war/downloads

2. Once the files finish downloading launch them. (they take a bit to load up) Do part 1 of 2 first, and then do part 2 of 2 when 1 of 2 is done)
IMPORTANT NOTE: The destination path should go to your Medieval 2: Total War folder in steamapps! NOT your mods folder!

LOCATION: Find your steam folder (should be in your C drive.) and then go to the SteamApps folder. From there open the common folder and then your Medieval II Total War folder.

Computer > Local Disk (C:) > Program Files (x86) > Steam > SteamApps > common > Medieval II Total War

Again, DO NOT set the destination to a mods folder! It creates it's own mods folder.

3. In your Medieval II Total War folder there should be a application/launcher that says "medieval2" (without the quotes) and it has the medieval 2 total war icon. Make a copy of it and rename the copy "kingdoms.exe" without the quotes.

A desktop shortcut should appear on your desktop. Use that to play.

Hope this helps. Hopefully I didn't forget anything. :/ I'll try to answer any questions.

EDIT: There are other ways to do this, but this is the way I did it. ALSO, you need to REMEMBER that Third Age is installed different than most other mods so I don't reccomend installing other mods the same way unless it says so.

EDIT 2: You don't need to delete and/or remove any of your other mods. And I can still play vannila M2TW with no problems.

Additional help from the main forum:

THIRD AGE HELP IS HERE
Right,i installed it using the instructions from Modb,BUT when part 1 and part 2 and patch are being installed SELECT yourself the path to steamapps-common-medieval 2 (Not the mod folder, just medieval2), do it 3 times for the 3 installations, then proceed with the full step guide they provide and gg,(personally,i changed teutonic to LOL(random name) and renamed the Lotr mod teutonic, now when you play from steam teutonic it launches LOTR

Sorry for horrible english

My problem is that after I download it on to my pc I can't install it. The icon of the file is a blank paper. If I click on it my pc won't run it. It suggests I look into the app store. I thought that your supposed to download it off MODB.com next install it on your pc and then go thourgh the install guide it setups for you.

I am no tech guy, but it probably could be a problem with macs being incompatible. I have trouble getting most mods running for minecraft on it.
