Severe lag issues
Hello,

I'm having an issue with pretty bad lag in game. It works fine in the overworld, but whenever I get into the context menu it slows to a crawl and I cannot do anything, basically.

I have a GTX 970 and Phenom II x6 1100t oc'd to 4Ghz, so it shouldn't be my system. I use Applocale emulator to install and play the game, and have all HF patches installed. I'm on windows 10.

Any ideas?

Excellent!!!
Edit the main post with the solution, I'm sure a lot of people still have the problem.
I have found a solution that keeps the translations and gets rid of the lag in the game. I tried to post my solution to both hongfire and anime sharing, but I couldn't get the ability to post at either of those sites.

basicly the solution is this:

take the 10586 d3d9.dll and rename it to d3d9_alt.dll and place it in to the same directory as your aa2 install. the HF subtitle loader now comes up, there are subtitles in the game, and there is no more lag. if you are using the HF translation patch, it uses a custom d3d9.dll to load the subtitles, if you overwrite it. it will fix the lag, but you will lose almost all of the subtitles.

tested on:
AA2 + append I + append II + HF Patch + DLC HF Patch
Toshiba P500-ST6844
i7-720QM
GT 330M
8Gb DDR3

Windows 10 Pro 1607 14393.82 x64
Just to clarify you're putting both DLL's in the AA2 directory?
yes. the custom d3d9.dll that gets installed by the HF patches. and the 10586 version of d3d9.dll (renamed to d3d9_alt.dll). put them both into your aa2 directory default : C:\illusion\aa2\

After a reinstall of the HongFire patch, and putting the 'd3d9_alt.dll' pre-AU dll in, the game works.
Literally almost cried when I thought I broke my game. THANK YOU.
for those in the release preview ring there was an update last week that brought win10 to 14393.103. one of the things fixed was "various incompatibilites in direct3d" there were other fixes as well, but that particiular fix was what caught my eye. I have yet to test to see if the problems with the OS's version of d3d9.dll have been fixed. I will test it soon. You can expect the patch to come out soon for everyone else. maybe a week or two.

UPDATE:

problem still exists under 14393.103. Booooo! Hiss!!!! :(
Bad Microsoft! Bad!

I replaced the file but the subtitles are not coming up. Dialouge boxes are translatred but when characters shout in the overworld there are no subtitles. Even my menu when I start up the screen just says play now and not "continue with subs"

@Naku-Chan You have to replace the file in sys-wow64, not in the game folder.
@ryonin, @naku-chan

you dont't need to do that.... see my post on how to fix the lag AND have subtitles, without messing with windows system files

@Chris Solomon But you tourself said that it'll have problems if you're using the HF Translation patch, which is kind of the standard on this game. Besides, switching the d3d9 in syswow also solves compatibility programs of other games, such as VA-11 Hall-A.
@ryonin
you did not read my entire postings then..... I gave a solution on how to get rid of the lag and still have subtitles. here it is again.

messing with windows system files is never a good idea. just place a working copy of the file in the games directory, and windows will use it instead of the windows installed version. I am not familair with the game you listed, but i for all windows games placing the DX files into the proper directory of the game will force the game to use that version not the version that windows uses. also another reason not to mess with windows system files, windows updates, and sfc will return the file to it's proper version if an update or repair is run.

using the method i quoted above, AA2 works just fine.

if you do not have a copy of the 10586 D3D9.dll anymore, let me know and we can work out a way for me to send it to you.
