9Y4DG-Remote Amateur Radio Setup
Learn how to setup a very effective remote Amateur Radio Station using the Win4Yaesu Suite.

Hi, this is Dev Gosine, 9Y4DG, with a video tutorial on Remote Station operation. I’ve been licensed as a ham radio operator since March of 1983 and if I were to add all the years that I’ve spent in front of a radio or in the shack, it would amount to a couple years. And maybe as I’ve aged I’ve realized that life is a lot more than ham radio. Although it’s an excellent, amazing hobby, I want to live life.

From flying in light aircrafts, to sailing the Atlantic, or having dinner at the Yacht Club, or partying with world-class sportsmen, or just hanging out with friends or loved ones, or serving the underprivileged through Rotary, or spending time with friends in other countries, visiting some of the wonders of the world, or just recharging after a week-long of international conferencing with your favourite beverage.

Now, in each one of those shots, my amateur radio station was always with me. How is that possible? Well, thanks to some amazing radio design and awesome technology in software, this could be achieved. Here we are using the FT-991 at the Base Station. This radio comes equipped with a USB and a CAT port (makes the interface so much more effective). Software that is being run on the computer which of course is hooked up to the Internet. At a Remote or Mobile Station, we could use a computer which could be located in some other part of the world connected via an Ethernet port, or we could use a mobile phone or tablet accessing the internet via Wi-Fi.

Let’s now see how all of this is put together for an effective Remote Station. On the computer, the free software that is being used is, first, the Win4Yaesu Suite. This is an amazing software that controls the Yaesu series of radios: the FT-991, FT-3000, FT-5000 and so on. So this is what actually provides the control over the FT-991. Now, to be able to use this software from your tablet or mobile device, we will run TeamViewer. TeamViewer allows remote access to this computer that is hooked up to the radio. So with TeamViewer, we could now directly interact with the Win4Yaesu software suite. As it is in this configuration, we will not have any audio; we will not be able to get the audio piped to our mobile device, and this is where Skype comes in. So Skype will provide that audio link between your Base Station computer and your remote computer. So, we run these three bits of software: Win4Yaesu Suite, TeamViewer and Skype.

So here we’re seeing that the Win4Yaesu Suite, this is the ultimate solution for controlling the radio via a computer. It gives you all the controls, all the access, you know. You set in any possible setting, you can even view the menu setup. It’s really, truly amazing. There is TeamViewer, which provides remote access to the computer connected to the radio. So with TeamViewer, that computer that is connected to the radio could be remotely accessed. Skype, like I said before, produced or allows or facilitates the bi-directional audio from the base computer to the remote or mobile device.

Let us now look at the Remote/Mobile Station via the Internet and here we’re using our laptop. I could now be at or in a hotel room in some other country and it’s plugged in via Ethernet. Notice on the screen, I have, I am seeing Win4Yaesu; now this is actually accessing the computer that is at the base station, which is at home. And this is the screen that we have on the computer at home. TeamViewer, of course, allows us to access that screen so we see just as it appears on the computer at the Base Station, it would appear on the remote computer as well. Of course, we’re also running Skype, and Skype will allow that bi-directional audio.

Notice here we have one of my mobile phones, a Samsung Note 4. It’s pretty old but it does the job. Notice the screenshots are exactly the same because here we’re also running TeamViewer and Skype. Here we’re running TeamViewer and Skype as well on this Huawei tablet connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi and notice that everything that we do here, we can change all the settings and whatnot on the radio via Win4Yaesu, the Win4Yaesu Suite. Let’s now look at some samples of Remote Station operation.
