He is a courageous and confident man and enjoys the small things in life, being easily pleased. He is an avid hunter. Harrag is generally considered the complete opposite of his younger brother Harren whereas Harren is cruel, ruthless and considered evil by most, Harrag is known as kind, honourable and good. Even being dubbed 'Harrag the White' as an ironic nickname due to him being a Black Brother and in contrast to his brother being known as 'Harren the Black'. Harrag is homosexual and was sent to The Night's Watch due to his preference being ousted in his youth, the same day was the day he renounced his faith in the Drowned God.

Harrag is shorter and thinner than his older brother and keeps his hair and beard thick and unkempt, he is pale with a scarred face.

  - Character Biography (Short Summary): Harrag Hoare is the older brother of Iron King Harren Hoare. When Harrag was twelve years old he was discovered by his younger Brother Harren kissing another boy, and Harren ordered his guards to beat the boy in question and informed their Father of Harrag's "perversions". Harrag believes to this day that Harren only informed their Father so he could be the Heir himself.
  
  Subsequently, the boy Harrag kissed was brutally murdered by Harrag's Father and Harrag himself recieved a beating that nearly killed him before being thrown on a ship to Eastwatch-by-the-Sea and disinherited and forced to take the black under threat of death. Harrag's Father had been looking for an excuse to rid himself of his "weaker" son as Harrag was a great disappointment to him due to the boy's kindness and lack of interest in combat. Harrag recovered from his injuries and flew through his training, taking his vows as a Ranger and performing his duties admirably, becoming greatly respected as one of the best in the Watch.
  
  Harrag became Lord-Commander in a landslide vote at the age of eighteen after he led the brothers of the Watch to victory in a battle that seemed lost after the previous Lord-Commander was killed by a self-proclaimed King Beyond The Wall. The forces of the watch were routing and Harrag rallied them, crushing the wildlings within the hour and slaying the Wildling King in single combat.
