Can't Defeat Pirate on Easiest Difficulty?

This is the type of game that I usually enjoy playing but I repeatedly have died numerous times while trying to defeat the Pirate near the beginning of this demo - even though it is set to the easiest difficulty setting.. I have spent the maximum amount of points that I can into Defense, Attack, Speed, & Ulta. What am I doing wrong?...
