The game has no official servers so the connection is made between the two of you, either using IP directly (Lidgren) or via Steam (which is basically the same thing). Are you playing at different locations? You could try switch who's hosting, to see if it works better the other way around. The server has slightly higher network load than the client. I really liked how cute this game was, but clearly the developers have abandoned ship.
