Can I play as a male character?

You're allowed to not like things about games that get released, however silly or petty your reasons may be. The onus is on the developers to make games that you want to purchase, not the other way around. If they make something that you don't want to play, it only makes sense to point out to them what the reasons are, in the hopes that other developers will take notice and take your grievances into consideration.

Video games are a visual medium, therefore the visuals are highly important whether you realize or acknowledge it or not. The purpose of the player character is to provide you with an avatar through which to experience the game world. Therefore, if you do not like the avatar the creators provide you, it is entirely reasonable for you to point this out. After all, you are probably not the only person who feels that way. These effects can be exacerbated when performances come into play. Just as one would dislike certain actors or fictional characters in other media for whatever reason, someone could dislike a game character for exactly the same reasons. Except with gaming, the critical exception is *you* are the character.

Both game sales and developer provided statistics have repeatedly shown that male characters and traditionally attractive characters of either gender, in that order, are vastly more preferable over any other alternative. This is in spite of what social media says, and in spite of the fact that statistics also show the gender divide between gamers is closer to even than it was in the past.
So what you're saying is that games should be made via focus group, with zero room for artistic expression or interesting stories the devs might want to tell, but ONLY what will sell best? No art, no expression, no unique stories, just whatever the market says the most people will buy? And no room for stories that aren't designed for the straight white male audience either? No games or stories that someone else might feel represented by, just what YOU feel represented by?

That sounds like a pretty sad place where gaming eventually just dies and every dev is just releasing the same game over and over.

Yeah, that's exactly what I'm saying. /s

There's a gap lightyears wide between focus-grouped corporate games, and niche auteur games. I will always support creative's vision for their work, but gaming is also a business that needs to make money in order to survive, and there's a happy middle-ground in it where everybody can win.

If pushing artistic boundaries with their protagonist was their goal, it clearly didn't help them much. Almost nobody played this game and few people who did even bothered to review it. This is a game that desperately needed to be a success, and now the developers have lost a majority of their staff. Maybe Tron is so irrelevant that the game would've flopped with a different character anyway, who knows? I actually don't have a problem with female characters, believe it or not. We're just doing a post-mortem for a game in a franchise that we love, and we're simply pointing out one thing that might've made the game better for a few of us.
