Small community is better.

It goes beyond a small community though. Even when the game was cut down to like 400-500 player count, there were still a few regulars in this discussions you'd see posting from time to time, negative, supportive, it didn't matter. They seem gone now too, for the most part. The game has finally dipped into having such a low player count that Steam doesn't even bother showing the playing now count on the community hub.

Like I'll repeat it, it's an MMO. Massively Multiplayer. The idea of having an MMO with a small community seems like a huge oxymoron to me, if the game was catering towards 200 people playing regularly then they would have designed it differently, like actually putting emphasis on how many 500s you could earn to order to encourage a community focus being built around traders / crafters / gatherers / etc.

The game itself doesn't even try to foster a community based on the fact they allow players to straight up avoid socialising with people and just appearing as an anonymous player with nothing above their head. The fact rooms are so small and conversations are disjointed, there's no area or global chat (yet - but we've been waiting a long time for something that should have been here months ago) and skilling in general is designed to be click intensive (most of the time) and often requires you to move between rooms which breaks up conversations points to the game itself trying hard to prevent a decent community forming anyway.

There's only really one good thing about a low player count and that's not losing the room conversation you are in when you leave. Back when the game released and had 20,000 players, you would leave a room to continue skilling and then you'd come back into a completely different room filled with different people, thanks to the room design they went with. At the very start of the games lifespan when everyone was happy and eager to play there was already a spanner in the works preventing people from coming together properly, we were basically forced into our own solo playthroughs because of that, practically.

Also trading. There's nobody around to trade with. The game shipped with a massive plaza around the merchants guild where they obviously planned to recreate World 1 / World 2 trading with people yelling, buying and selling in a big group. You can't have that with a small community though, and that's one of the features you say the game doesn't have "so it's not a concern". It is a concern.

When game features can only exist or be utilised if you arrange it to happen outside of the game, that's a problem. An MMO needs to have enough players that content is always readily accessible, and forming groups isn't a requirement - just a bonus. Groups will probably have higher quality gameplay, of course, but you should still be able to partake in the basic game functions without doing so, because the games average community always being around. Otherwise if you have to arrange with people a date and time just to play a minigame or do a trade or whatever, well, that's a hallmark of a dead game.

What happens if they release PvP, release minigames, flesh out faction content and maybe even add content that allows clan creation, and still the game flounders and has like 200 people playing at any one time? Would that still be a good thing? Where all of the actual MMO content ends up being unsalvageable because there's not enough people to do anything?

A game filled with people not talking and just following the same path as everyone else, grinding up to 500 and completing quests without anything else keeping them invested, like a proper community or anything to do with said proper community?

I don't want that to happen. I don't know if it can happen, but I still hold hope that the game will fix all of its issues and revive itself with a healthy player count. I do not want the game to languish in its current state, with so few players that every single time you log in you see the same three dudes training in the same area you are.

And don't forget about profitability. I don't know how many staff are at Fen Research and I don't know how much they get paid, but if everyone is paying say £5 a month to play the game (and not everyone is) then the money coming in every month is way below enough to pay the salaries of the employees who create content for the game, it's probably even below the level needed to keep the game running with servers and such. Maybe.

I do genuinely miss the first month or two of the games release. We got a lot of QoL updates, optimism was decent and a "Catherby" was created at the Carpentry Workshop as everyone was heading there to grind carpentry to unlock banks. It was pretty great, but now it has gone. I hope it comes back some day, in a different form. Stonemaw Hill better be something good.
