I'll even go as far to say that ever since the PS4/XBOX One era, the physical media itself is the DRM even for games that are fully on the disc as you're still required to install the entire game from the disc, which is also needed for the game to start. And no, this is not the same as the PS2 era where the games had no installation process and the entire game is streamed from the disc instead of your internal storage during play.

I mostly agree. I don't think the installation process is DRM but the fact that you don't have any control over the game's code anymore.
The PS2 had DRM with the system requiring disks to have a special kind of handshake which wasn't easily reproducable for consumer hardware, which means writing your own code for your console wasn't feasible. That's still DRM, but at least you could easily make backup copies of your disks even if those backups wouldn't run on original PlayStation hardware.

I think the best kind of non-intrusive, non-technical DRM protection was on the Gameboys. There really was no technical DRM meaning you truly owned those devices. Nintendo's solution there was to just code the hardware to read the initial screen and only continue to boot a game if it displayed the Nintendo logo. This allowed us as kids to write our own Gameboy games (mostly Pokémon mods, I had a friend who ordered a cartridge reader and writer and empty cartridges) since the logo requirement was a purely legal protection and you're fine if you don't intend to sell your games unlicensed. Most importantly your hardware just worked and didn't lock you out for running unlicensed code.

It's crazy how we've gone from that, to Nintendo now reserving the ability to remotely brick your Switch 2 if you do so much as play a used copy that they flagged to have been tampered with by someone else.

I know not everyone goes that far but I'm at the point where I don't buy any hardware that includes a computer chip and won't allow me to run my own software on it or install my own operating system. PCs are self-explanatory, the Steam Deck as well, but for example I only buy Android phones that can be rooted and have their Operating System replaced, and I avoid Smart TVs and "smart" cars. Anything with an intrusive unreasonable digital lock is a no-go for me. That may seem extreme but I mean, if this continues like it has then in the future we're going to see toasters with computer chips that lock your ability to toast behind a recurring paywall.

A console that has proven modding tools to safely run your own software is fine as well; I bought my Wii U before I changed my stance but I do like that I can emulate other consoles on it and back up my games and save files thanks to stuff like Aroma.

7k+ hours on the clock, much of which is alt-tabbed or afk but still, I spent more time with GD than most other games. It's one of the very few games that I rarely get burned out on. Even if I do, I usually come back with each update.

One thing that explains that amount of hours: I never do theocrafting in grimtools or whatever, that's really boring to me.
When I start a fresh character I don't have a fleshed out build in mind, just a more or less vague idea. This idea is developed as I level up. And since I have a lot of ideas (which come naturally when I look at the items I've found) those hours can quickly ramp up.
The build diversity in GD is absolutely crazy. Currently I got over 120 different lvl 100 characters, only a handful of them weren't leveled legit.
I usually play SC but played some HC to get 100% achievements and to beat the HC Classless challenge.

I played most better known ARPGs on the market but none of them were as fascinating as GD is. D2R is probably second best but it doesn't even come close. There my motivation mostly came from playing with friends.
I had some fun with D3 for the same reason but it felt a little bit too casual and I disliked the main campaign. I dabbled a bit in PoE when it came out, but I disliked the close camera zoom and how you are forced to trade with other players to get the stuff you need.

Currently I'm on a little break while waiting for the next patch. Recently I went back to Sacred, which kicked off my interest in the ARPG genre over 20 years ago.

I know I am not supposed to, but I envy commitment such as yours. I keep trying though, forever hopeful I will settle in to one main game.

GD is a good as choice as any, and the 120 characters thing is actually amazing :)
