Well the Store page says it the Redband game page says it
"A New Story in Hellraiser's Canon
Unwittingly kickstart Pinhead’s ritual to unleash greater pain and pleasure than ever before."

Clive Barker doesnt consider the rest of the movies Cannon as he considers the Hellbound Heart (book) and movie 1 and 2 to be that. His books The Scarlet Gospels and to a lesser extent Weave World could as well be considered that but basically everything in between doesn't seem to be considered as such for the man himself so I stand by what I said.
Anyways time will tell.

But it is not a cannon in terms of story arc. So it is not about it happening between first two films, or before, or after them, or during them. And the studio itself stated that first two films are inspiration for its visuals. In terms of cannon it is about core rules which can't be changed. The same thing is done with Alien IP.
So I also stand by what I said as I only repeat what comes from its developers. No speculations from my side.

"Where does the game fit in Hellraiser lore?
The game is inspired by the first two Hellraiser movies, drawing from their atmosphere, themes, and mythos. However, its plot is not directly connected to the movies. Instead, it should be seen as a new story set within the Hellraiser universe – one that stays true to its lore while offering a fresh and terrifying experience for both longtime fans and newcomers alike."

questions about RNG and getting synergy between items

1) i saw a comment here mentioning, that items wont get better if you e.g. have defeate 4/6 bosses. is this true? so even that late in the game, i will only get the same wooden sword as if i havent defeated a single boss?
==> so the items dont have different levels like "wooden swor lvl 1" with 1 dmg VS wooden sword lvl 3" with 3 dmg

Generally correct, but there is a single weapon, armor, and collection of specific items available on the second map who's gimmick is to upgrade after beating a boss. Most items do not do this, what you get on a given run is exactly the same item as you'll have on every other run. You are able to customize your weapon with oils (for +1 stat) and an edge (for an extra effect), but this is associated with beating a boss, are not persistent across runs, and are equally available to any weapon.

In a similar vein, there are no persistent upgrades beyond simple item unlocks for doing specific in-game achievements, which add the associated item to existing item pools. These achievements range from simple beating a boss to generating absurd amounts of armor or health regen over a single fight.

2) how defestating is it to have bad/no synergy? can you still defeat the game? or should you, once you realize the current items are too bad, abandon the run and restart? i can imagine this getting frustating fast.

The game is structured with complete transparency. Once you see the enemy you're fighting, you are able to calculate exactly how the battle with that enemy will resolve before the first turn happens. There are no random elements to consider once the battle itself begins, all RNG is confined to what items are offered to you as you explore the map. Thus the loop is to check what you're fighting this time around, figure out different ways to beat it, and then find one of those ways in your exploration.

Some bosses are beatable with a high enough specific stat (such as the Boar, who is a pushover if you outspeed it), but most do not care about your stats and will trounce you unless you've built around some kind of functional synergy. Most synergies are not difficult to build once you understand what they are and what you're looking for, consisting of only 2-4 individual items, which might include a specific weapon, edge, or set bonus as well as actual items.

Kingmaker, the multiplayer PVP mode, is a different beast entirely as some builds can be truly insane. The player is not held to the same standard as the regular bosses, and can become either dramatically overpowered or the weakest thing on the map. When your boss is another player's champion, there simply might not be a feasible path to victory.

3) ho would i go building my build? in Dead Cells i usually looked at my starter items and planned a build from there; only changing it if i find other items fitting for a different synergy early on.
==> starting with a weapon, which deals more damage against freezing/frozen enemies. go for a ice build etc.

Experience and knowledge are your guides, and you can open the compendium at any time to verify items, bosses you've seen before, and set requirements. The boss is always clearly visible so you know what you're facing, and how to beat it. Each tick on the timer bar equals roughly 5 steps on the map, so you also know exactly what is or is not reachable before the boss arrives. Your biggest enemy is therefore the Fog of War obscuring the map from you and keeping you from making a direct path to the exact upgrades you need to find, as well as "inefficient" movement wasting steps.

At first you should focus on learning the weaknesses of a given boss, and the only way to do that is by encountering them and looking at their stats and unique ability. Using the Boar as the easy example, it is a boss that will deal 14 damage on the first turn if it outspeeds you, which is enough to one-shot you at base health. It only has 5 HP and no armor, so the most direct ways of defeating it are by outspeeding it with 5+ speed or by using indirect damage triggered from various "bomb" items at the start of the battle. A less direct solution is to stack Health or Armor to absorb the single massive hit and kill it on your following turn. All bosses are built in a similar form, excelling at one particular thing but having multiple different counter-strategies you can attempt to work around. Few are as simple and direct as the Boar though.

Once you understand how to deal with the bosses, you can start consulting the compendium and begin plotting out different synergies with the items you have unlocked, work towards getting the more difficult unlocks like "generate 100 armor in a single battle" or "Beat Leshen with only Wood items". This game loop repeats once when you unlock the second map, with a completely different layout, pool of items, collection of bosses, and significantly more difficult final boss to defeat.
