I just put it because I remember a big drama in the modding community for it that whitewashes every single non-white character, I think I also might be misremembering some things about it since it's been awhile. Also couldn't the lone survivor romance their companions regardless of gender?

They don't. They outsource to smaller companies (in this case, Virtuos) who use it. If Konami had made this title in-house, it might still have had the talent to do it properly in the FOX Engine.

Never tried it with multiple users, so I dunno if it's possible, but if it's just one-on-one, use Steam Friends and start a voice chat with them that way. Done it a few times myself in Atlyss, and it works pretty well.
