I find it amusing that you think you need a massive marketing budget or streamers.

You don't - the game got served up to me and most people I know through Steam. It generated word of mouth with an accessible playtest and people like it.

WARNO is set in the 80s - BA is in the present day. They are different games - albeit in the same genre.

I played WARNO and I didn't like it - like with SD2 the community had big fish in a small pond - syndrome. Topping out a 100 person ladder (especially when you cheat) just isn't that much of an achievement - but it felt like it mattered a lot to some people.

How the game got served up to you is how it is was likely marketed. Word of mouth is usually enough. Helldivers 2 etc - that's an example of a multi-channel social media marketing strategy - this looks very much like the devs paid Steam.

And you'd be shocked, maybe even stunned to learn, that the reason you heard it word to mouth was because... it was marketed through various channels which reached the eyes of one of your friends and boom, there it was, marketing did its job, because you also heard of it. Do keep in mind, marketing is not just an ad on a video or an image on the side.

Money lets companies make algorithms favour them, which in turn means that folks feeds get pushed the product, which means it gets more interest, and so and so on. There are entire career paths directly linked to manipulating algorithms for marketing purposes.

You seeing YouTube recommend you Helldivers gameplay? That's marketing doing its magic.

Your friends getting "Recommended for You" for Broken Arrow on Steam? Marketing baby!

You are seeing the difference between doing any marketing and no marketing. Eugen has 0 marketing budget, at best they ask Streamers to promote their game and that's about it, but that isn't much. A couples of thousand viewers across dozens of content creators. Pump a few thousand grands into Steam, news outlets, attend a few gaming conventions to promote your product, and suddenly you are watching your follower count spiking, rapidly, which directly links to sales.

The funny part is that because of the heated arguments during development between Warno and BA, Warno saw a bump in players because folks finally heard of the game for the first time.

You don't need to market a game, that's how it is for just about all indie devs, but for those it is all about luck, pure and blind luck. I will once more point my finger towards Manor Lords. Solo dev, didn't have a publisher the entire time, so I highly doubt he had a massive marketing budget, let alone campaign going on. He just got lucky, his game was scouted during development at one point and the idea resonated with the community, now we are here.

However, to ignore the effects of marketing is genuinely hilarious. You could even see it with Eugen when they were still under Focus. Their games tended to have an initially higher player count, but rapid drop rate and horrid player engagement. After the swing and miss that was '44, SD2 was naturally tainted, which wasn't helped by the initial fumbles either, meanwhile Warno is currently doing way better than their previous titles overall. Right now it is dragging the floor with its numbers since there has been a long content drought.
