i get what you mean, but i disagree. i don't think that the core problem is Russia's upgrades.
the Russian empire only limited access to most upgrades. rather, i think it's the grenades. most of the time, when i play against the Russian empire on brutal, the amount of units isn't the problem, because they easily get killed by my units since they have no armor. but it's the mix of the of the riflemen being spamable coupled with most of them often throwing grenades that creates this frustrating issue. i've made my own discussion if you wanna check out my opinion on it. it's called "My ideas to hopefully solve the problem with grenades (especially on the Russian empire)"
I think that's a fair take. I think 5 troops per 70 stars is still a bit much, but grenades do take it from "You can probably hold if you build up well" to "You're completely screwed," though I think the AI getting lucky with artillery would still pose a major threat even with grenades taken away given how small the trenches are.

yeah, 5 troops per 70 stars might be a bit excessive but i haven't really had an issue with the overwhelming number of units since they have no armor so they get killed easily. rather, as i said, the overwhelming number of grenades that get thrown at you. although the russian empire can only upgrade to a 20% chance of throwing nades, it still feels like it's higher than that. artilley also poses a threat but it's far less of an issue compared to grenades, atleast in my experience. the only time artillery is really an issue for me is if i am pushing a trench and the AI times it well so half of my troops get killed. but i can usually quickly rebuild my army from that. the artillery actually has a cooldown, compared to the grenades that are based on chance. overall. the problem with the grenades is that they get thrown way too consistently which doesn't allow you to rebuild your army and counter attack, since you are always losing the troops you just bought 10 seconds ago. it usually just results in you hopelessly throwing money into troops that you know will die before even being useful to you. as for the trench size, i did talk about letting the units disperse through the whole trench as a way to minimize losses from grenades and artillery in my discussion. one of my friends said that they cannot do that because the trench upgrade button and the arrows are inside of the trench itself. but they can be moved to the side if necessary.
