I don't know if someone already said that, but if you're struggling against a mass of AI's who're harrassing you, try to just use beer and ignore food altogether. One tavern with one beer will give you +8 popularity for 30 peasants, effectively negating the negative -8 popularity for not having food in the granary. You're basically forced to use this tactic in the Time Trail Missions, so the Crusader trails are actually a good place to start adapting & get used to it.
