Quite simply, I had no idea I was buying a 'The Thing Blood Test Simulator'.

Instead of only testing other people's blood to see if they were indeed - The Thing, apparently every object could be these 'things' in disguise, waiting to jump scare you. Ugh.

Hey, found this in another thread and it worked for me:
If you go to SteamVR in your Steam library, then Properties → Betas, and select 'previous' in the beta participation section.
