"Survival games are a subgenre of action games which are often set in hostile, intense, open-world environments". What is hostile or intense about a completely safe place that you can place wherever you want?
The thing is, Dragonwilds doesn't give you a lot to work with. Maybe that's improved over the last few months, but the materials needed to progress are behind tough enemies, and even if you kill them they could respawn fairly quickly or you get hit with a random event. Once you break into the new resource, then the enemies are a joke, but it's too much of a leap with a fairly basic combat system.

It feels like the game is balanced around at least two players advancing into areas. It's not a very friendly experience solo.

Meanwhile Minecraft has the opposite problem. There's little to no reason to venture into new territory when you can just dig down and get diamonds fairly quickly. Fine when you're new and don't know how to quickly get anything, but once you know the game, it's a joke.

I mean I'm playing solo and don't have issues. I'm even on Hard mode.
I think it takes a similar experience to MC, once you know how stuff works it's not hard to just get past everything.

The materials being gatekept is actually good because it requires you to overcome an obstacle, however you choose to do so, to obtain your next set of materials. Once you get them, then you stomp and move on. I often just sneak past the major threats and get stuff I need. After unlocking teleports I put a teleport in a major point of interest early on so I don't have to sneak past the same groups of enemies each time.
