BE HONEST, IS IT STILL SCARY?

What you're running up against one of the failings/successes of the human psyche.

We naturally acclimate to conditions, horrific or otherwise. By which I mean, Through continued exposure to a stimulus, We gradually become numb to it.

Irregardless of the method of horror conveyance, "After a while" we become numb to it. It could be the most terrifying thing in the history of man, and for the brave souls that chose to play it for 400 hours, it would no longer be scary... Startling or surprising from time to time, Maybe, but not scary, not horrifying.

Our brains just adapt and overcome.

Through continued exposure to a horror game, you will eventually get to a point where it's just not scary anymore- You can't feel fear of it even if you want to. Phasmophobia has hit that point for a large percentage of it's playerbase- People are no longer playing to feel scared or enjoy the horror- Because they kinda can't even if they want to. So now they're playing for the social aspects, or to speed run, or to learn the ins and outs and prove how good they are.

The more you play, the more it isn't scary, the stronger a grasp you have on mechanics, the less scary it is too. The more you can 'fight back' against the ghost, the less scary it is. The more players you're playing with, the less scary it is. The more of those players are close friends, the less scary it is.

And.. Really, there's nothing that can be done about it. Even the scariest games will after enough play become something the player simply can't be afraid of anymore.

And the above will remain true even after Horror 2.0. Even if they add a bunch of jump scares, even if they totally remake the game. You would acclimate in due time. And you can't undo the things you've learned or acclimated to; Once you've learned all the things the ghosts can do, it's done, It ceases to be mysterious and terrifying, and becomes run of the mill.

But also, Jump scares aren't really scary after the first two or three times- A good jumpscare relies on a strong atmosphere to keep the player on edge, If you start spamming them it quickly becomes annoying rather than scary. What jump scares do, contrary to the name, is startle or surprise a player; Not so much Scare them.
