A few minor questions

I haven't seen enemy ships in a while and I was using that to get my rusty materials for my base because I thought they looked cool. is there something that makes them appear more often or is it a time thing?
Look also for violet vortexes that indicate points of interest where you can use your mech, those contain enemies and useful things as well. Also note that you can grind down asteroids and loose metal constructions for extra materials.
second question. I discovered a race of people called the ferenox or something? they look like armadillos or some other kind of marsupial. whats up with them? I couldn't find any lore on them although I could have been typing their names wrong.
Yes, there is a race, but they are non-playable and do not have much about them in vanilla.
Last question. I've seen frackin universe come up a lot. I did some surface level research and it seems to add a lot of things that sound cool, but also sounds like it adds a whole lot more that I might not be into, but it seems like its the go to mod everyone likes. I've also read you have to delete your universe to use it. How much does it really add to the game? or I guess what I'm really asking is when I do my modded playthrough and I use it how different would the experience be, because call me crazy but so far I really like the base game and I've been told thats a hot take. so i'm just curious since you all know more than me what a given playthrough of FU Starbound might feel like
Frackin' Universe add a lot. And by "a lot" I mean A LOT. Tens of extra playable races. Actual racial bonuses, including dietary differences. Research system and base building to facilitate your progress. Resource extraction from various blocks, liquids and items. Tens of new types planets and hundreds of new biomes with uncountable new unique resources and enemies. Lots of new environmental hazards, with resistance system that actually works and fun, unlike vanilla. Hundreds of new unique armor sets and weapons to craft or find. New dungeons, aka missions and adventures to have in them, sometimes hidden in forgotten corners of the universe. Much better mechs. Optional BYOS (build your own ship, literally from blocks with your own hands the way you like it, with bonuses from some parts) and actually useful ship crew. Kevin (if you know, you know). Hundreds of other changes to the game like combat changes, space stations to visit and on and on.
They say that FU is necessary mod, because it add to the game so much that vanilla game feel like 0.0.1 alpha proof of concept when compared to it. Even biggest, toughest Skyrim mod packs do not improve that much on game as this single mod, I can tell, I played all that extensively. Which is a shame on Starbound devs, to be honest, they were like "hey, let's make a game about visiting various planets" and never refined their vision, before abandoning the game altogether. Terraria, for example, never stopped evolving and expanding.
You are asked to delete your character and universe to start completely anew because FU change universe and planet generation a lot. For example there are lots of new types of stars with new planets, and planet generation no longer have useless deep lava ocean at the bottom (instead, you can fly up to the sky and maybe find something interesting). Same for character, because if you use existing character, you risk missing on BYOS, some starter dungeons and quests may bug out because some vanilla quests changed a lot.
It is true that Frackin' Universe can be overwhelming and confusing, because there is so much to do and discover. You start new game with lots of manuals in your ship to help with that, although you don't "need" to read them. You can just wander the starter planet, find a certain NPC and do his quests, he will explain necessary basics on the go.
