Future Proof Steam: Add Censorship-Resistant Payment Methods
W tej chwili

OPs ChatGPT generated pro-'blockchain' post aside, the answer really is to just have another attempt to integrate bitcoin [not 'blockchain', bitcoin] payments on steam again.

A lot has changed with the status quo in bitcoin payments since the last time Valve tried it. For one thing its not necessary to deal directly in bitcoin transactions via the bitcoin network any longer, nor the ~10 minute confirmation wait. Technology called the Lightning Network was invented, roughly what this does is lets you shuttle around payment sized amounts of btc with instant settlement [the payments are programmatically atomic in fact, they either succeed instantly or fail instantly, there is no middle grey area like waiting for confirmation etc.]

LN is not a sidechain, it is not a stablecoin, its not a separate token of any kind at all. It is not 'blockchain', nearly all of 'blockchain' is a scam. LN transactions are regular signed bitcoin transaction that are perfectly valid on the bitcoin network itself if need be, an LN transaction *is* bitcoin. But its using clever cryptographic constructs routed thru its own overlay network that sits on top of bitcoins network [which is why its sometimes called Layer 2] to move btc value around without bothering the main bitcoin network every time someone wants to make a little payment. In common terms of 'transactions per second' that people talk about, the only limit to LN TPS is effectively how fast CPUs along the payment route inside the network can sign, verify and forward the cryptographic constructs which comprise transactions, as you can imagine this is effectively unlimited for retail use cases. This also lets you habitually avoid bitcoin mainnet transaction fees, which is great for retail payments.

Valve if you are reading this, there are LN service providers who could help you integrate LN payments into steam, with varying levels of self-custody or third party custody of funds, for varying amounts of service fees, according to your needs. I would recommend an outfit called BTCPay for something towards the more self-custody end of the spectrum. This is the entity that created a solution for Tesla Motors to accept BTC/LN payments for their cars with was deployed briefly, before Musk flipped out and did an about face on bitcoin overall, as he tends to do. Not trying to start politics about him, just giving an example of a major integration BTCPay helped deploy.

Valve, you have shown a great propensity to take action regarding systemic external threats to your ongoing business. thats why you have spent the last nearly 15 years developing and deploying the proton/steamOS open source tech stack, to good success i might add. It might behoove you now to re-consider similar action regarding payments for your business, as recent events have made clear that you are vulnerable to capricious policy decisions beyond your control there.
