Assists do not count. Only kills. I really wish we still had huntplayers so we could see the actual numbers change. It was pretty cool to see yourself as a six star kill a six star and gain 10 points and then die the next match to a three star and lose 40 points. It gave a much better understanding on what was actually happening.

Do you know how MMR awards points, on a per kill basis?

I don't know how players can go from zero to 3 stars very quickly, but when you have thousands of hours you don't move despite a positive k/d over a long period.

As the titel says the hedgehog does not trigger its buffs when you reach below 70% hitpoints. Nothing shows up in the battle log.
