We haven't gone to another shard to visit, or been isekai'd somewhere. We had a piece of one dragged and integrated directly into the game's base world, with some of the poorest story telling to date in FFXIV. World building -should- go a lot deeper than 'here's an aesthetic, and now I'mma throw it in here'. When you throw world building and narrative out of the window, it's not surprising when more and more people are losing interest.

You need some level of cohesion.

Where would you draw the line? Walking down Ul'dah and then suddenly the sky turns black, and everything becomes black and white, and things warp into a 1940s Noir film? Everyone's suddenly American and there are automobiles driving around Ul'dah? I mean, that'd make some degree of sense in Garlemald where it's established that such technology (and styles may or may not) exist.

It's less about aesthetic and more about cohesion. That said, the blatant "ah pppl really like cyberpunk rn look at how popular cyberpunk is" mentality that's gone into this, just adds to that aspect of the writing feeling cheapened significantly. I'd much rather have the scenario I described above than this new age neon light 'happy go lucky' cyberpunk aesthetic. I mean, I'd 100% be more on board with something like Neocron.

But the bottom-line is, if your world lacks cohesion, the narrative suffers, and everything suffers as a result. If you don't care for story telling all that much, I can see how this wouldn't bug someone.

The writing was cheapened in general since the launch of DT. S9 popping out of no where was more interesting then our baby sitting fest barely learning anything about anyone else and the "new world" because they decided to give Wuk lamat main character syndrome her being the 3rd most wordy NPC in the entire game then did her dirty on character building which just so happened to be the main point they were pushing which is odd as hell to do.

Solution 9 is not supposed to make sense, its a sliver of a dead world that merged with ours. 100s of years passed with levin fueled technology that surpasses the old Allag tech. How else do you introduce that and the tool that might let us walk through the rift easier as well as others?

The reason i could care less about the Gear/clothes and Aesthetic is the whole expansion is slop already and the only thing good coming out of it was some weird sci-fi city drop and me not having to see the same rehashed gothic armors, some what similar plate armors, Recolored dungeon gear that you can't dye from old content and mages having to wear another dress.

Could they have done it better? Hell yeah im not going to argue that. They could've let us go there instead of merging it with our world but people still wouldn't be happy because "fantasy theme".

Oh absolutely.

But crappy generic cyberslop aesthetic does nothing to improve the experience. If anything, it damages it.

The very claim that 'it's not supposed to make sense', is a massive antithesis to good writing. You're supposed to make it make sense, somehow. It's not Lovecraftian. It's not vague. It's not some mysterious element like the magic system in Tolkien. It's shoe horned in, with the stroke of a battering ram, in the clumsiest fashion possible.

If we can get by on 'oh, writing isn't supposed to make sense', then I suppose we should all clap our hands like baby seals and wait for the inevitable Toy Story World Shard. Because every game is Kingdom Hearts now. Yay!

How about, we don't waste years of world building in Endwalker, for one? What if we explore themes like the fall of Empire, and the destruction/reawakening of an entire world, in-depth, with their own expansions? Instead of just throwing them away for cheap moustache twirling, theatrics and nostalgia cash ins? Yeah, that'd be a good start. Next up, when we make a new expansion, let's try to uh, keep to what was advertised, but ensure the emphasis is on the player, instead of not only introducing a unrelatable wookie character that takes up 99% of the screen presence, but throwing them into some needed R&R?

No, we needed crappy generic cyberpunk city to make the kiddos go "OH THIS IS JUST LIKE THAT THING I LIKED"

When I sit down and play a Star Ocean game, I understand that the overlap in tech' and cultures betwixt fantasy and sci fi is explained and contextualised via an entire universe and wealth of careful lore crafting.

Realistically, slamming an entire shard of a world like that into a different sphere entirely should have EXTREME REPERCUSSIONS FOR EVERYONE AND THE WORLD STATE. Not just a quick tron invasion.

Conjunction of the Spheres in Witcher? ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up so much ♥♥♥♥ it was unreal.

Edmond Feist's Riftwar Saga? Major culture ♥♥♥♥♥ uppy across the board.

In FFXIV? oh uhm, there was a battle and uh.. there's some weird electric purple city with neon lights and it's uhm a thing and uh, uh... uh yeah okay.

It's bad writing. It's terrible world building. It's a poor aesthetic clash.
