Here goes. Lets just get this all out there at once this time shall we.

The problem with the writing wasn't the fact that Abby killed Joel, nor was it with any of the other themes they were trying to portray.

The problem lies in the sloppy, lazy, unintelligent way they told the story. The way that Joel and Tommy idiotically went against their established personalities to walk into their deaths. The way Abby let Ellie live despite the fact that Ellie was screaming that she would kill her,

Due to a combination of Ellie having plot armor, and the desire to portray Abby as a "good person" who doesn't want to kill Ellie, they had Abby leave Ellie alive. Despite the fact that Abby knows for 100% certainty that Ellie will be coming after her and her friends.

Later on after Ellie accidentally kills Abby's pregnant friend, Abby is again shown to be a "good person" by not killing Ellie's pregnant friend, AND she once again can't seem to penetrate that plot armor, because she lets both Ellie and Tommy live despite the fact that Ellie has killed several of her friends, including the man she loves. (and they both killed a countless number of her WLF companions.)

It is all very poorly written in an attempt to manipulate the player into liking Abby more than Ellie. It really goes to an extreme length with how they use the dogs. Abby frequently encounters friendly dogs that she can pet/play with, along with a pet dog that follows along and saves your life in a cutscene while you are playing Abby. On the flip side as Ellie you are presented only with hostile dogs you pretty much have to kill, and in one QTE cutscene you are actually forced to kill Abby's pet dog. The very same dog that saves the players life when they are Abby.

So much of it is just unbelievable as it could possibly be. They could have written it in a way where Abby manages to find and kill Joel without portraying Joel and Tommy as bumbling idiots. They could have had Ellie find out about Joel's death after Abby left so that Abby doesn't have to choose to leave her alive.

After Ellie kills her friends, they could have written it in a way where Abby didn't have to once again be a "good person" and choose to let Dina, Tommy, and Ellie live. Ellie could have saved Tommy and Dina, then they have their fight sequence, Ellie gets the upper hand but Abby escapes. Then the cycle of violence and revenge continues without Abby having to go against her established personality in order to "be a good person"

Even at the end, they could have had Lev begging them both to stop fighting, and THAT could have been what finally ended the cycle of revenge, instead of Ellie just deciding at the last second to let Abby live. She needed revenge SO BADLY that she abandoned Dina and went after Abby again, only to suddenly decide at the last second that she didn't need revenge anymore.

They didn't have to do the nonsense with both groups having a pregnant woman.
They didn't have to do the love triangle in both groups with the teenage romance drama.
They didn't have to do the nonsense with Abby's father saving animals in his spare time as an attempt to portray him and Abby as "good people"

They didn't have to be so incredibly blatant about using dogs in an attempt to manipulate the player into liking Abby.

All of the praise for this story focus entirely on the positive aspects of what they were trying to achieve, while completely ignoring all the glaring flaws in how they wove it all together.
