They didn't add reds because at first they wanted you to engage and waste time with their retarded RNG items, and everyone though it was ♥♥♥♥ so they refactored the system. It's likely that the "reds" were supposed to be the martian red skins. Darktide is a mess of stupid ideas thinking they're getting away from the lessons learned from vermintide 2.

Its actually slightly different.

Fatshark officially stated that they didnt like the min-maxing aspect that happened during Vermintide 1. They had the noble but stupid idea that everything you find should be viable, you should be able to find a green weapon and switch it out for your blue because it just fits you better.

They tried this system in Vermintide 2 and it worked during leveling, there were a few times where a green was more powerful than a blue, but eventually people still went for the reds witht the maxed out stats. Because thats what players do.

Fatshark still doesnt like it and tries yet another change in Darktide. The first version was absolutely atrocious and made min-maxing almost impossible by featuring too much RNG that the time needed to invest for even just a couple maxed out weapon could be calculated in years. Then they tried to slowly give the community some breadcrumbs for min-maxing, like changing either just one Blessing and later being able to change two things, but eventually the whole min-maxing system came back, because thats what players want.

Thing is, the stats system was yet another idea to make different rarity tiers viable and i think they somewhat managed it by having the grey tier have the full raw potential and every othere tier just giving one minor or major buff to it. Mostly minor though, the stats and blessings were rather nerfed to what they were in Vermintide 2, which is most likely another reason for trying to make everything viable and it works. At least i didnt have much problems clearing Damnation with any kind of rarity, because the raw power is in the grey tier already.

I think reds were a problem from the beginning because the community most likely expected them either to be stronger or completely maxed out, which goes against the idiotic design philosophy to be against min-maxing.
