AoM failing... Why?

Sorry, but I really don't think that anyone's purchasing decisions are based on qualities of the Retold UI (which is perfectly fine) compared to that of the original release, and certainly not because of game balance where old AOM was roundly much worse in that regard. As has been noted, it actually did mostly prompt the existing AOM community to move over to Retold, especially since most of the bugs and such have been improved, the bigger problem is that it didn't maintain as large a casual player base as other Age of Empires games, I think that just has more to do with the fact that AOM has always been less popular than AOE2 in particular, and most people who bought it (including me) and mostly here for the single player content and when that was completed that was what most people wanted to do with the game.

I franky don't feel like Retold's UI is perfectly fine, it's way too generic and there are obvious inelegances in the design, there was no need to change the menus architecture which was perfectly fine indeed.

About balance you have to remember that while legacy was heavily imbalanced it didn't have monthly patches, any changes were very seldom which allowed for a very stable meta, an environment where testing strats is easier. People in Retold are satisfied with the balance formula (myself included) but that doesn't mean most of people playing AoM agree with that vision that the proper way to balance a game is to do it live.

There are also design and technical issues with Retold : weird physics such as the pushing thing, vils coming onto the wrong resource, soldiers breaking formation while attacking even from far away.

I agree that not having a big enough casual player base undermines game's growing potential, they should have considered making additional campaigns for the base game instead of commiting to the AoTG nonsense which is just not fun to play.
